Pranayama and blocked nostrils

Hello !

I am trying to keep a regular and daily practice of Pranayama exercises in the morning; but most of the time when I get and sit to practice, one of my nostril is blocked, it changes and one day it can be left the following it will be the right nostril.

Is it recommended to force air through a blocked nostril and is there any technique to release these obstructions?

I already try diving pressurisation techniques and jala neti but it doesn’t help.

Thank you in advance
Jo

Certain pranayama is most profound when breathing through the nostrils. It is as it is. If you cannot then you cannot. Either do the best you can with where you are, change your pranayama or (more appropriately) address the dietary and environmental issues which are causing your congestion.

If your sleep chamber is not toxic (and by this I mean the air is clean and filtered and you are not being bombarded by emf and off-gassing carpets/furniture), then the turn is to your eating. You can, I assure you, begin an elimination diet and likely find the culprit(s).

Hello

That’s a frequent issue.

The solution: Buy a Yoga Danda. It works 95% of times.

Enjoy!

Thank you panoramix and Gordon.

I am already using an appropriate diet according to my Ayurvedic constitution. My room and practice environment are super clean and the air couldn’t be fresher. I live in the mountains of southern france and never use heating in the rooms.

Gordon, what food could possibly cause such physical reaction? As far as I can remember I have had the “one of the two nostril is blocked problem” since young teenage years. And I modified my diet multiple times since then…
I quit gluten, dairy, coffee, tea, alcohol, red meat of course, certain grains and legumes… being able to identify the wrong element in one’s diet can be very difficult sometime. If you have a lead to help me infestigate further I would be very happy.

Panoramix, why not I will try to find one where I live and see if it brings a different experience with breathing exercises. I didnt even know what it is before you mention it and I see it can also support during meditation practice so I would always be able to use anyway

Thank you

Jo,

There’s always sutra neti: urethral catheter? It not only opens the nostril, it conditions and tones it. I think it’s a number 10 but forgot. It’s about 1/8 in dia. If you need help with it, let us know.

good luck,
siva

I posted on here a little while ago and believe my post was pritty much the same lol.

The yoga danda works for me

Dog,

Yeah, although I’m not sure how it does what it does, the danda kind of makes sense to me. I’ve never tried it, but I rarely have a problem unless I’ve been sick.

Does the problem improve over time, or is it something you just go back to now and then when you need it?

curious,
siva

I think sutra neti is a bit hardcore for me now, i wouldn’t insert anything into my respiratory canals without a professional supervision first ! But thanks for the recommendation.

I will definitely try the danda, much softer approach for me now lol… Maybe a combination of jala neti and danda will work.

Jo,

Aw, come on: it’s just a little rubber hose!

If it doesn’t hurt your urethra, it’s not going to hurt your nostril. Just joking. You’re right. You should have someone show you: the trick is to push it downward, and it only has to go an inch or two to open the nostril. You don’t have to do the whole, pull-it-out-your-mouth thing, although it’s a great way to entertain your friends.

peace,
siva

sorry for the repeat
