Pranayama and Tinnitus

Hi,

I have been on and off about doing Pranayama in my life. But as I understand the importance of pranayama, a week back I decided to take it more seriously and be regular with it. BUT, now as I can feel calm, I have also started hearing internal(very bad) continuous high pitch humming sound (very similar to the airplane’s sound when it takes off) in one of the ears. It may be tinnitus, may be not. but doesn’t go away. Its not there when I wake up in the morning but after doing pranayama (esp Kapalbhati sets it off), it starts and lasts throughout the day. There could have been a possibility of me doing pranayama wrong, but I watched Baba Ramadev’s videos again and again to verify if I am not doing it wrong. Well, apparently, I am not doing it in a wrong way still the problem persists.

Additional info - this never happened when I did pranayama before.

I request experienced and knowledgeable people here to comment and help me solve the problem by giving an advice. Also, if anyone has previously experienced the similar problem, please comment. Thanks.

You are stating a cause and effect relationship between the tinnitus and the pranayama. If you are certain that the pranayama is the only cause of your problem, then you should stop doing it.

Thanks for your reply Asuri.

IT is said in the scriptures that one must sit erect trunk and head straight not bending neck down before pranayama can start.

Otherwise pranayama can be dangerous. also if you start with advanced pranayama it can be threatening to you health.

Also first you must start the prana otherwise there cant be any pranayama. what kind of pranayama Are you doing ? are they advanced pranayama?

Blessed friend, my name is Hesbi. I am a 36 years old Egyptian living in California. I am in my first year of study of Ayurveda at the California College for Ayurveda. I have been studying ancient cultures, archeology, metaphysics and practicing spirituality since I was about 14 years.

We have to remember that according to Ayurvedic Principles, each person is a unique and potentially vast and infinite universe all of there own. We have to remember that pranayam and asan are not generic exercises for the masses. These are very ancient techniques, that used to be closely guarded and taught one on one by guru to disciple. So we should be very careful when we follow any mass market teachings or blanket pranayam and asan disciplines such as those promoted by Swami Ramdev Ji to millions.

For this reason, pranayam and asan should only be practiced in accordance to our own constitution. Otherwise, it is possible to upset the balance of the many dimensions of our body.

If we want to experience the benefits of these spiritual disciplines we must practiced them under the supervision or guidance of a master teacher. Otherwise our haste, excitiment, and bad habits can damage us, and slow down our evolution toward our divine state of Yog.

When we experience an excess of Vata (wind) in our body and mind we can experience abnormal audio perceptions. As if wind (vata) is blowing thru a silverly flute. This is called Tinnitus in the west, and Karna Nada in Ayurveda.

When we hear or feel anything abnormal, we should seek the guidance of a professional Ayurvedic Physician. The longer we wait without knowing the cause of the imbalance, the more likely it is possible to aggravate our condition, and aggravate the volume and lingering duration of the sound.

Please be calm and stop all pranayam practice until we fully understand our constitution and what pranayam and asan are proper for us. We should also stop the consumption of strong drinks, coffee, alcohol, cigarette and marijuana.

Rest assured, we have treatments and we are not going mad.

Pranayama should only be practised under the supervision of an experienced teacher who can monitor the effects it is having on you.

You might be the fittest most flexible person on the planet but that does not mean your subtle body is ready for pranayama. Too much, too soon can overload the system. That’s why you need a teacher.

On the other hand, you may have tinnitus in which case you need to see a doctor to rule out any underlying problems.

Experience has proven this an effective way of thinking for me.
