Pranayama

i have been doing alternate nostril breathing and bhramari since two years by reading the various books related to this pranayama. Recently i do not know whether this has happend because of this prnayama or not but i used to get some sway in the body while i go for walkingand some times giddiness and some times i am getting the noise of waves in the ears. i have taken vertin 8 mg for 10 days then it subsided. is this due to the anulom viloma pranayama or due to the bhramari. will anybody enlighten me on this .i have for the time being stopped anulim vilom but doing bhramari by which i am not getting any previous probles. shall i continue the anulimvilom also?

Dear Sir,

I do hope you are joking. When you return to anuloma viloma, you will most probably repeat the negative side effects. With age and serious medical problems in your profile, you should be with a qualified teacher or yoga therapist. Before practicing, you need to clear this with your medical doctor and receive personal instruction from a qualified yoga teacher. At the very least, you should respect:[ol]
[li]NO uneven breath ratios, so practice 1:1 inhale:exhale[/li][li]Only for short durations, maximum 4 seconds in and 4 seconds out.[/li][li]NO willful pauses (kumbhakas)[/li][li]NO more than 6 - 10 rounds in one session.[/li][li]A 5 min rest in savasana after your practices[/li][/ol]There are plenty of risks even with the above precautions. Please do not risk your health or your life with inappropriate practices. Please don’t believe that books, youtube or dvd’s are good teachers for people with health problems.

Then, I will be honest, I don’t like to give advice on what asnasa, pranayama to follow etc where the student doesn’t have access to a teacher, because I simply view it as dangerous and irresponsible. A man of your age and with the problems you have, should be with a teacher and should not attempt asanas and pranayama on a self-learning/teaching basis.
I don’t beleive anuloma viloma caused you the problem you mentioned , i do it every morning with 10 counts inhale and 20 counts exhale, feel only goodness as far as health concerned and with obvious lifting up of energy level.

Hope your health will be recovered soon

Dear Tina,

I’m happy that your pranayama practice is going well. If you are also 66 years old, pre-diabetic, have heart problems, suffer from (controlled) hypertension and ischemia of the heart, then your experience would be relevant to Mr. Tatvamasi42. Otherwise, you might be encouraging practices which may not be beneficial without instruction and medical advice. That’s difficult for both of us to judge on the internet. While no one will probably ever know for 100% if anuloma viloma caused these difficulties, it may have, and I always prefer to err on the side of caution. Namast

oh with so many problems then i strongely recommanded do yoga with experienced teacher
