Question about yoga

I just started doing yogic breathing (which to me is slow, deep breathing exclusively through the nose).

However, I seem to get headaches and sinus congestion.

Does anyone know why this is?

Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dave,

I’d gladly try to help on this but there’s not enough information for me.

Some background (intake) on you is appropriate (young, old, tall, short, thin, heavy, fit, sedentary, well, ill…).

Also an outline of the practice. Are you doing this throughout the day? In the morning? As part of a larger practice?

What is your diet like? Are you on any medication???

Hi Innerathlete. Thanks for taking the time to answer my post.

I’m 34, 5’8", 145 lbs, fit, but have been taking meds for anxiety and depression.

I’m fanatical about healthy eating (I use a food journal) and exercise sometimes, though not heavily because of medication sideffects.

So since you are “fanatical” about healthy eating can I then assume you avoid refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco?

Do you consume products made with U.S. wheat?

What meds are you taking?

IA, will help you out, I just thought I would add a couple things,
how much dairy do you have, too much or wrong type may create excess mucus/congestion. of course dairy is not the only thing that will do that.
You can try a netti pot to help clean out your sinuses, since I started using one I have greatly decreased my allergies to cats and I breath better.
just thoughts

Yep, I’m avoiding those things. Also taking Prozac.

I rarely consume dairy products.

Namaste Dave,
It sounds like you may have allergies and may be pulling lots of allergens into your sinus cavities when you are breathing. I’ve had the same problem over the years but a Neti pot and surgery to correct a deviated septum have cleared it up nicely.

Also, are you drinking enough water during the day? Insufficient water intake can also dry out your breathing pasages (among other things).

Hope this helps,

kiran

what also can help after using the neti pot is put some oil one your little finger and massage inside your nostrils as far you can reach. It helps keep it from being dry and also for allergies not so quickly to
The headaches can also be a symptom of more oxygen than you are used to.
