Question for men: groin pain in shalabhasana?

Hi folks

Does anyone have a strategy for dealing with the pinching sensation in the groin during shalabhasana?

The men in my class mentioned discomfort in the groin, and that simply rearranging their bits didn’t really help… or that they hadn’t found the right spot.

Any helpful advice out there at all?

Thanks in advance
Y

I have similar pinching sensation. I just use folded blanket - that’s simple solution.

As a male teacher, I can say that this problem can be remedied, and will depend on how the weight is being distributed. In variations where the legs lift off, remind students that they should bear their weight on the lower abdomen, as opposed to the pelvic region. Where the palms are flat, cue them to press firmly into their palms while planting the tops of the feet.

This same issue will arise in dhanurasana; again, have them rock forward so that their lower belly bears the weight.

Thank you for responding.

I’ve suggested the blankets - not much success it seems.

I’ll suggest redistributing the weight to the abdomen and see if that helps.

With gratitude

Its possible they are stiff, if i didnt do dhanurasana for a while i get pain on one side due to stiffness. Ask them to interlock hands and thumbs together and see if that makes any difference.
If it still does not work for some in your class you could always advice them to skip this asana.
Or even better take one leg at a time instead and maybe this will prepare them for the full pose later on.

Thanks Fake Yogi.

Where do you think the stiffness may be located? and how does that stiffness cause pain in the groin?

I get pain in groin/leg where they meet it feels like needles penetrating it in the dhanur asana only and that stretches pretty much. for me slow stretching works and swan asana is good for open up.

Many asanas can be done in presteps and then fully on this and dhanur i.e. One leg at a time can be done followed by both legs as thill will also warm these muscles up before full pose and will also give some extra protection against injuries. So if some people get pain just tell them to do 1 leg at a time to build up streng slowly.
I think in this pose they tense their muscle at the same time as lifting as it is a difficult pose and then stiffness and tensing at the same time make their muscle cramp as the correct muscle is not lifting and supporting it.

You could make it easier for you and first make one leg lift for whole class and then full pose and tell the new students to skip both leg lift if they feel pain, it is possible for somethat doing one leg will warm them up so full pose does not hurt. All student are different so you better try and see if this works.

The program im doing has This sequence
1 leg lifting both sides.
Shalabasana
Dhanurasana 1 leg both sides
Full dhanurasana.

I think it is like all muscles if you stretch them when they are too stiff they tear and it feels like needles which means we went too deep. I think we all have had that experience if we did any sports as kid where stretching was a part of it. But what really takes place in our muscles i cant explain that is outside my knowledge.

From my experience, it has more to do with placing excess pressure on the sciatic nerve, which originates in the pelvic region and runs down the legs.

Hope that helps.

Might be possible but for me it is the same feeling as if you stretch backside and tear it. For me in dhanurasana also heat comes that is maybe the nerve. But i think the heat came when i was younger and stretched my backside, however You have more experience of teching so it might be as you say.

But the important is there is a way to avoid it.
