Returning to Yoga later in life and with arthritis

hello im just starting yoga again after many year (15yrs), im 45yrs old and a bit over weight, I have always been doulbe jointed which made yoga easy when i was young but now i have arthritis and im in quite a bit of pain. can i start yoga again and will it be benifical

Of course you can start yoga again - presuming you mean asana and not yoga. And whether it is beneficial or not, in the physical realm, depends completely on what sort of yoga you select and in what way you bring yourself to it.

If you are hypermobile I’d suggest a teacher and style that has some sense of stabilizing students in poses. You may have to root them out as most teacher would not have a clue as to how to peel such an onion.

Namaste Lorraine,

Welcome to the forum. Yes, please start with yoga. My own mother is 60 and has osteo-arthritis in her hips. I have taught her a few years ago a very simple asana series for her condition which she diligently do everyday. In the beginning she complained that it hurts her more, but after a while the yoga started to work and now she uses it to manage her pain in a more sensible manner without loads of medicine which I and herself belief hurts and damage our bodies even more. In the mean time we have extended her programme and included more asanas for variation and some for more specific therapeutic purposes.

Good luck, please find yourself a good therapeutic yoga teacher who has the patience and understanding to work with your condition.

I thought asana was sitting yoga?
