Hello ppl…i am new to this forum and I am getting into yoga… i was checkin out this site Ashiyana Yoga Retreat Centre and i came across SATSANG…I would like to know more about this subject…can some1 pls find out some info abt this topic for me.
Word “sat” means truth, and “sang” means “to be with”. So it means to be with the truth. On satsang you get knowledge abouth Truth. It can be in form of lecture, or just singing bhajans (spiritual songs) or kirtans (repeating God’s name),or all of it. Satsang is the crest jewel of yoga. To have satsang (especially with truly realized saint) is something which is the most difficult thing to have in whole Creation, as told by many great yogis and saints.
Hey there hadma thanks. So what do u mean “to have satsang with TRULY REALIZED SAINTS”? please name some for me and pls give me sum references where I can get such knowledge.
I got another qt for u…if I do yoga now & then I stop, will it affect my body later…(I mean like if u go to the gym for one month & then suddenly stop it takes a bad effect on ur body) is yoga similar to such after effects?
Also please take a look at this site Ashiyana Yoga Retreat Centre and tell me if u think i shud go there when it opens…coz im from Goa itself & this place is in Goa.
I want to have an experience of yoga…do u recommend me to start yoga at home on my own or should i go for classes first?
Please let me know soon.
Thanks
It means to be seated in front of such a saint and listen to his words. A truly realized saint, or as it is commonly said - a self-realized saint - is human being who realized the Ultimate Reality, Absolute, God (call it waht you want). Such a saints were e.g. Swami Sivananda of Rishikesh, Paramhansa Yogananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Muktananda Paramhansa, Ramana Maharishi, Subramuniya Swami, etc. There were many of them, and still there are yogis who attained the ultimate goal. One of still living ones is Vishwaguru Mahamandaleshwar Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda Puri-ji, whom I luckily have for my Gurudev. You can find lots of good information on Swami Shivananda’s web site or on Yoga in Daily Life site.
I have to go now, but I’ll return soon and answer the rest of your questions.
Hey hadma,
Thanks man…it was nice of you to xplain all that to me. I hope u will answer the rest of my qts soon too.
Till then
Clive
Here are the addresses of those sites:
www.sivananda.org
www.dlshq.org - main site for Swami Sivananda and his lineage. There’s section where you can download Swami Sivananda’s whole books for free. Also many, many more. This is one of really genuine and respected yoga schools.
www.yogaindailylife.org - my Gurudev’s organization web-site. In section “Guru-vakya” you can download many mp3 excerpts from Swamiji’s satsangs.
Hey hadma,
U still hvnt answered all my qts…wat are the side effects (if any) of yoga?
will it affect my body? do u recommend me to start yoga at home on my own or should i go for classes first?
Please reply soon
Clive
Sorry Clive, it’s just that I have no time. I’m constantly outdoor, far away from computer.
No, there are no such effects but I would not reccomend you to stop for longer time because you won’t get the right effect. It’s better to practise even for 20 minutes every day than not to practise 4 days and then on 5th day to practise 3 hours. Continuity is important.
I looked a bit on that site but not much (sorry, time…). It looks OK, but if you really strive for spiritual path, sooner or later you should find a Guru. It’s not an easy task and there are many fake “gurus” so take one step at the time. I think going there would be a nice start. Of course, you’ll know better when you come there. Just remember that whenever someone offers you a “weekend enlightment seminar” avoid it as far as you can. Yoga is something for the whole life (and it actually is a way of life) and there are no shortcuts.
It would be advisabe to go on classes first because there are some basics which, at least, you should learn from someone. Book just cannot explain everything. But still if you cannot attend any yoga classes, the book is also good. If possible try to find some yoga school with tradition, e. g. Shivananda Yoga, Yoga In Daily Life, Bihar School of Yoga (Satyananda yoga), etc.
All the best!
Hey Hadma
Thank you…I guess u hv answered all my qts for the time being…tc & best of luck in watever u do in ur life
