Scientist in yoga

Hello everyone,

I recently started doing yoga. I went the first time to increase my embarrassingly bad flexibility. I have really enjoyed it for this reason as well as for the fact that I feel less anxious in general. In my life, anxiety of one type or another has often led to me making poor decisions about behaviors and what I eat and drink.

I am a scientist. In my job I use science to study cancer and in my life I use science to solve problems.

I strive to live a life not of self denial, but of self understanding. Slowing down my mind with yoga has been a very pleasurable experience so far.

Cheers,
BK

Lovely…

Welcome to the forums, and to yoga.

Thanks to both of you. I look forward to chatting in the future.

Welcome mate. There are some other “science minds” here…

The most amazing thing about starting an activity is not to find out what you where expecting (improve your flexibility), but figure out al the additional bonuses behind any activity…

how delightfully empirical!

Xamilo - I agree. I’ve been pretty surprised by how much I like yoga. I was fairly resistant to going, but my wife talked me into it.

Techne - That made me smile, thanks.

Scientist in yoga ? Do you think there is conflict between these ?

Also … you say you use science to solve problems in your life. If these porblems are of personal nature than how can be the scientific method applied to them ? Would you say that you are lead solely by reason even in personal matters ?

So far there has been little to no conflict. Some things my yoga instructor says take on a tiny bit of a religious tone, but I have no problem with most religious teachings until people begin to take them literally.

In terms of problem solving in my life - I definitely try to solve my problems with logic rather than emotion, but I realize that as a human beings emotional state is very important to us. So I guess I try to logically see what the best solution is, factoring everything including my own and other people’s emotions… If that makes sense.

My favorite definition of science is “the formation of testable hypotheses and the subsequent testing of those hypotheses.” I think most people do this in their lives without knowing it. For example - someone might decide “mexican food tastes bad/is bad for you” because they have only been to taco bell. After gathering more data on a trip to Mexico, however, they abandon this hypothesis for one that more accurately represents their entire experience. This is kind of a lame example but it was what jumped to mind…

Cheers and thanks for the question!

BK – I just saw your title. I’ll be smiling about that for a good 10 minutes!

I am genuinely a scientist. Glad to see that I am not the only one. Cheers!
