Short-List of YTTC in India

Namaste

I made a short-list of YTTC in India from various sources (including this forum’s posts) but I am still to make a decision. I would greatly appreciate any tips, testimonials, info -positive and negative!

  • School of Santhi w. Swami Santhiprasad, Kerala
  • Yoga Institute, Mumbai
  • Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiran, Chennai
  • Shri Kali Ashram, Goa

Thank you,
Have a beautiful day

What kind of course are you looking to do? What is your current level of experience, and what are you looking to get out of training?

I did my YTT at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai. My teachers were so insanely intelligent and their teachings so well communicated that it just silences me with admiration to think about the time I spent and continue to spend with them. That being said, they don’t offer short term yoga teacher certification classes, only long term with multiple visits over a few years. They do have one-month intensive programs that introduce people to the philosophy and lineage, and you receive a certificate of completion but not a certification of teaching ability. Chennai is not a tourist city and it is harder than many other cities to find cheap lodging nearby this school. Most people stay in nearby rental apartments or at hotels, and rickshaws in this city will squeeze every rupee out of you if you let them so it’s best to stay close to the school since you’d be there all day anyway.

The other schools I am aware of but have no experience of.
Good luck!

Thank you for your reply!

I did 300 hour teacher training with Shri Kali and am now living at the Ashram for a while before I go back to Scotland, I plan to return for further study.

Shri Kali a traditional school for the serious yoga student but its location and relaxed vibe also suits someone taking a “yoga vacation”.

The main teacher comes from a tantric background and has studied the vedas and so much more for all his life. Bhagavan is also a loving person who spends many hours with students with specific questions or issues.

Most of the negative feedback I am familiar with relates to the tantric way of addressing schedule and the conflict between Yoga Alliances prescribed hours versus traditional person centered teaching of yoga. Some people also find the no-nonsense approach in lectures difficult.

If you are from a tense, rushed, rigid culture you may be initially confused or confronted but allow yourself to relax, as we are constantly cultured to do in Asana, and listen and study as guided then you can go home with a rich experience for yourself and as a teacher which you may feel inspired to build on.

I choose Shri Kali by emailing people who had trained there and assessed their experiences, this was so valuable to me and I would be happy to skype with you.

I will check my skype is on my profile

You can also check Mahatma Yoga Foundation, It is a non-profit organization built on the path of Universal Vedic teachings (ancient Indian philosophy) with the aim to bridge the gap of knowledge between the ancient and modern worlds. We focus on teaching and helping our students to apply the yogic philosophy and knowledge in their daily life. It provides Yoga Teacher Training courses for people who wish to make Yoga philosophy a part of their life and also wish to take up yoga teaching as a career.

Well I didn’t see Rishikesh on the short list, but if it is positive and negative replies your looking for then I’m sure Rishikesh will launch the minions to scramble for credit and controversy.
