Should a woman be given Equal rights?

What is called woman’s liberation.

I have much difficulty to respond to this from a yoga pov. Perhaps this will suffice: yoga is about balance, bringing aspects on all levels into harmony and as the harmony and balance increase on the inside so does it reflect on the outside.

From the poetry and thoughts that started my nation (while we have work to do – some of it old, some of it new – to live up to it), rights are not given to people by people or governments; rights are inborn. Those rights are circumscribed by people and governments, but only at their peril.

Women’s liberation is an archaic term from the 60s and 70s, not in use much anymore in the west. As Techne posted, it is not a question of whether women should be given rights - they are born with rights equal to men. It is only societies - usually dominated by male culture - that strips women, or any other group, of their rights. Stolen from them, in other words.

Women’s liberation is not so much about rights as it is about roles and economics, and has been driven by technology at least as much and maybe more than by social concerns. In the days before our world of modern conveniences, women were by and large constrained to running the household, caring for children, preparing meals, etc. Women were dependent on men for economic support. If they worked outside the home, women were usually given lower level positions and often not paid as much as men for the same work, the fear being that the woman would get pregnant and leave her job.

But with the advent of modern conveniences, there is much less work to do in running a household and the women got bored. In this country, they are educated the same as men and do not want to be constrained to traditional gender roles but want to have jobs like men. Once they have jobs like men, they want to be paid like men. When they become no longer dependent on men for economic support, and coupled with a legal system that favors them heavily, men are forced to treat them at least as equals. Then you start to have problems in the society, with high rates of divorce and problems in schools, problems in the workplace, etc. I know I’m going to pay for this, but I like to think of modern women as being like factory raised chickens, with the mothering instinct bred out of them.

We have now evolved into a society in which only the wealthy can afford to live in traditional ways. Most families need two incomes to sustain themselves. Personally I feel that this is not all that great of a model for developing countries.

sure, why not?

Surely this sort of question, as it is currently composed, doesn’t really warrant posting on a forum such as this.

What I find to be a more curious question is “why is the OP posting such a question here?”.
