Hi I am a college student and decided to take a yoga class last semester. I would normally eat breakfast around 9 am(only meal). Yoga class would start at 2:30 and end at 5. The problem is whenever I did intensive work on my mid section where I would tighten my abs or stomach muscles alot I’d have to leave class after a while, because I’d get diarrhea. It happened like 4 different weeks. Also whenever I’d bend my head forward into my thighs or put an incredible amount of strain on the top back muscles of my leg I started noticing stretch mark scars. At first I thought it was a reaction but after I did more of these intense exercises I got more scaring from stretch marks. Any suggestions how to continue Yoga without the scarring and being sick?

What kind of yoga class did you take? Was it yoga in heated room?
What kind of poses did you do in class? What sequence?
How long have you been taken yoga ?
Do u drink coffee?
Have you changed you diet recently?
Stretch marks sounds just is bizarre… never head of that yoga or stretching can cause them to form… maybe it is a coincidence?
Some yoga poses can cause increased peristalsis movement… if you feel comfortable you need to discuss it with your teacher.

I think it is Hatha. In an air conditioned room. Fairly basic poses just to learn the basics of Yoga though so can incorporate other styles.

We started off with sunrise salutation followed by some downward dog arm stretches and cobra. We then would do more advanced moves atleast for yoga 101.
Main ones that gave me a problem for stomach were ones like little boat twist, gate pose, squat pose, spinal rocking pelvic tilt. Pretty much anything with prolonged tension on my mid section where you really feel the burn there.

For scarring pigeon pose, and forward bend any time I felt extreme tension in my top leg muscles and stayed that way caused stretch marks.
How long have you been taken yoga ? Just one day for 14 weeks of class. little practice outside of class each week.
Do u drink coffee? 1-2 a week at most
Have you changed you diet recently?
No fairly the same but unfortunately high in meat and processed foods and junk food.

I thought it might be something else as well at first but I only continued getting scars after doing yoga during weeks where we did forward bends and head to knees. I’m not very active besides yoga except doing leg stretches with a stretchy band, 5 pound wait lifting and crunches. I have heard of stretch mark scars from certain exercising though.
I admit I have never heard of scarring from yoga either and that it can actually help prevent scarring. I do have EDS Ehlers Danlos syndrome which may contribute to it if you know anything about that. It’s one of those double jointed disorders.
Ehlers Danlos can be the trigger to the scars…
If you relatively new to yoga, you can have very interesting side effects.
This poses are contradicted during diarrhea :
- cobra and everything on the belly
- absolutely no boat!
- knees to the chest, child’s
- all kinds of twists
- all kind of core exercises
- certain breath exercises
- forward folds…everything that compresses abdomen.
You can resume this poses later when you feel better.
you should be fine with the sun salutes, warriors, chair, planks, balancing …
