Side effects of Anulom Vilom Pranayama

Hello to All Yoga Admirers,

I am Amit age 26, I have been suffering from high blood pressure and tachycardia because of high stress and anxiety in job and studies from past 9 years. I have done all the medical tests of heart and every thing is fine except my blood pressure was high and fast pulse rate because of anxiety and stress. To calm my mind and nervous system I have started doing "Anulom vilom pranayama (Nadi shodhan pranayama)" without breath retention simple alternate deep nostril breathing. I wanted to make sure that can this breathing exercise cause any side effects or can there be any negative effects on body. Any reply and suggestions will be hearty welcoming :p.

Thanks and Regards
Amit.

If you have hight blood pressure you should practice retention on exhale and never ever hold your breath on inhale. You can do without retention at all. No one can tell what WILL be your experience, but more likely, That should help you hight BP and pulse. (pulse also can be hormonal).
For slowing down HR you can try the following easy exercise:
1.concentrate on you breath for 2 minutes, concentrate on the heart rate for few minutes
2. count each heart beat (for about 30 beats)
3. Start to count one count for two heart beats
4. count four heartbeats as one count.

Hope this helps

time taken for a purak & rechak makes the difference.

Swami Ramdevji recommends 2.5 seconds for each.

Amit -
Nadi shodana is usually not having any side effects for anyone. It is safe to practice, but if any unusual problem is noticed, please stop and ask for help.

CityMonk has given a great practice for becoming aware of the breath and the heartbeat. One more way to help this is to place one hand over the heart and one on the stomach. When you inhale or exhale, you will feel the belly and the chest rise and fall. Additionally, you can feel the heartbeat better. If sitting up to do this is difficult, you can do lying down with legs straight or bent.

And don’t feel bad if you fall asleep - you sound like you need it!

Which place are you from? Do you have a teacher who has taught you nadi shodana, or do you use a book?

Thanks to all of you for your valuable suggestions I will take them and apply for sure.Suryadaya as of your question I am doing this pranayama by watching " Baba Ramdev"videos and I have read books regarding yoga for an example “Raja yoga” by Swami Vivekananda and when I do this pranayama i feel good and relaxed. If there are any suggestions for me i will be very grateful to all of you.

Thanks and Regards
Amit

Shavasana will help your problems.

Do the nadi shodhana then lie down in shavasana. Release all muscular attention through the out breath.

If you get sleepy open your eyes and gaze at the ceiling.

Shavasana is restorative. Vayu flows easily.

How wonderful!

Maybe you’ll see Indra?

Maybe you’ll pierce through it all and see the Mack daddy.

Practice as long as is comfortable.
