So yoga can change your life huh?

My name is like it says. The title is appropriate, I’m starting a journey to change my life if anyone wants to help let me know. I know nothing of yoga yet but it is supposed to be the best thing in the world for my back. L4-L5 injury with sciatica! I will try anything because the Doc says nothing else can be done! Any help is a big THANKS!:stuck_out_tongue:

Try Iyengary Yoga, it’s super focused on alignment and they use props to help you develop the posture.

I would suggest seeing a Yoga Therapist with a particular interest in back problems as a general class is unlikely to give you the individual attention you need.

When your doctor says there is nothing more to be done what s/he means is that there is nothing more s/he can do. As long as you can breathe and you are aware that you can breathe there is always something that can be done.

I used Gary Kraftsow’s DVD " Yoga for the Lower Back, Sacrum and Hips" after I had surgery for 2 slipped discs so you might like to take a look at that.

Yes brother yoga will change your life. Yoga will save the world. Start from a good ashram close to nature. Jump into deep waters you will learn to swim. And if you practice everyday for 5 years then maybe after that your mind will begin to shift, perception diluted, and will alter. In this altered state of bliss you will experience satchitananda. And after that? That is the eternal question.
One thing though, I never found yoga, yoga found me

Hello Dan,

For me it’s far easier to respond to on-point or direct inquiries. Some terms are so general that I find it challenging to root out what the OP (you in this case) is looking for.

If you are familiar with the phrase “forest for the trees” that is a fair analogy for the modern view of Yoga. We, as a society, tend to look at the tree and mistake it for the forest. The physical practice of poses or postures called asana, this is the tree. The forest, which is Yoga, is incredibly vast. So much so that it is difficult to articulate.

In your case an appropriate asana practice can help with your lower back pain. This requires five things; your urge to grow, your willingness to change, your effort, a sound guide, and your patience.

The broader tools of Yoga (including the aforementioned appropriate physical practice) are far more powerful in the bigger picture than only one tool. This isn’t rocket science. If you have a screwdriver you can certainly fix several things. If you have the entire tool box you can, for the most part, fix anything that comes your way.

i would say try few private yoga therapy classes…it worth every penny

Yoga can absolutely change your life. I feel my life is a lot better when I do daily yoga. I just feel wonderful and clear and healthy.
Can anyone please tell me what is the best time for yoga.
Best time for Yoga is Early in the morning. But if not possible then , You can practice Yoga in the evening at least Four hours after your lunch.

to heal properly and fully, a re-contextualization of mind/body needs to occur. yoga and other healing modalities can help this process. must be willing to step outside familiar comfort zones to explore… if your not willing to change or are doing something just cause your doctor told you to do it then chances of healing are small. start with gentle forms and have an open mind. gentle yoga, yin yoga, feldenkrais, tai chi etc.
