Spine Pain...any ideas

Hi All,

I have been experiencing pain in what seems like the center of my spine (just a little to the right), almost like a bruise, but no actual mark. It is best described in the area where the bottom of my sports bra hits my back (but not caused by bra, I have already researched that out by tring different ones on…ect)

It started during plow, I would feel it when I was coming out of the pose, now it is more common.

After last nights class I am so sore, I’m feeling it when I even do a forward bend.

Any ideas?

Also, I’m not skinny (average, to a little overweight), so I doubt it’s from my vertebrae needing additional support from an extra mat, but I will try that…

Any ideas are much appreciated!

I am taking a few days off and my teacher is going to watch my form…but I wanted to throw it out there to see if anyone else had a similar problem

Thanks! Liz

Hello Lizzy.

Are you doing Halasana on foam pads or folded blankets? Are you doing Sarvangasana in your practice and if so are you also doing that pose on the props mentioned?

What other postures are you doing in the sequence of your practice? What style of yoga are you practicing? Is your general health very sound overall? How old are you? How frequently are you doing asana and for what duration?

Does this pain subside at night or in the morning? With heat or cold? When standing or lying down? Is the pain sharp or dull, lasting or sporadic? Are you getting any referring issues in digestion, respiration, lack of energy or fatigue?

It is possible to have too much “contact” or rubbing on the spinous processes even with added body weight (I’m not skinny). Additionally, those areas are used for muscle attachment so it is possible you’ve yanked on something or have a deep muscle spasm or a myriad of other things, including a subluxated vertebrae. If you have a health care provider that would be a good start. When I feel such things I typically go to my chiropractor but that is my choice for me and may or may not be yours.
