Steadfastness

I don’t even know if that is a word. lol

What I am talking about is trying to stick to a spiritual regime or keep in a ‘spiritual frame of mind’ when life just gets in the way most of the time.

So we meditate and for a few hours after that we are happy…then we go to work or get involved in other things and gross thoughts start infiltrating our heads…we sigh when we get stuck in traffic…we get annoyed when somebody shows up late for a meeting…we get frustrated when a report is not on our desks for an urgent deadline…etc

We cannot all be ‘Sadhus’ and meditate in a cave somewhere. To exist in the material universe means that we have to at some point interact with it. How do most of you go about balancing spiritual practice with the demands of a physical/material lifestyle?

I do simply the best I can under the particular circumstance and try not to beat myself up if I didn’t got it right.

Thank you for your reply.

Maybe what I should be asking is how people ‘keep in the moment’ and not let themselves become distracted by other things which require their distraction. lol

I think the moments of frustration and distraction you mention are actually opportunities to practice our mindfulness. It’s easy to be mindful when doing meditation in a relaxed space as you say but very difficult under pressure of work. Negative thoughts creep in and I begin to judge others or the world as a whole. That’s when it’s important to come back to the centre, breathe and (for me) ask the Divine to direct my thoughts.

It’s kind of like sport, you train in ideal conditions but in the heat of a game is where it counts

Hi,

There was recently a thread here that have focused on the same question namely how to be in the moment, the here and now and you might find interesting replies there.

Hermits also interact with material world, but in more controlled way.
I guess everybody one by one will lose interest in all this diversity and what is more important - will make proper conclusion about nature of demands.
byrd62au, I understand you so much.
