Stomach pain after yoga? (Not muscle ache)

I’ve only recently started practicing yoga. I’ve been doing yoga for about 4-5 days in a row, then taking a couple of days off (we’re in the process of moving and are spending weekends in a very cramped environment with no room for yoga), and starting over. I’ve discovered that on Mondays, when I start doing yoga again, I always get an intense stomach ache immediately afterward. It’s not a muscle ache, and it sometimes results in an upset stomach. It sometimes happens the next night, but then goes away for the rest of the week.

Am I doing something wrong? Is this normal? I really would like to attend a yoga class on Monday nights, but I’m worried that I’ll be sick in the bathroom after every class. Any thoughts would be really helpful.

Thanks!

You’re not doing anything “wrong” but you are clearly doing something that results in a Monday stomach ache.

Could you provide more details please? I see this is your first post so such a question might seem outlandish. However when posing a therapeutic question consider that the therapist needs a complete intake from you, a history, in order to get a complete picture.

Outline your current practice, the style, the duration, the teaching. Then please share something of your living - your diet, your sleep, your age, your gender et al. You’ve already hinted at your stress level

As if that’s not enough, is the belly pain cramping or sharp pain? In addition to “intense” where is it located specifically (relative to the navel) and what is it’s duration?

Please and thank you.

One of my friends is a yoga instructor at our college, and she holds private sessions in her home for her friends. I attended several of her sessions, but she doesn’t explain a lot about what type of yoga she teaches, what the names of the poses are, etc, which is why I want to get into an official yoga class. In the meantime I’ve been using the Maran Illustrated Yoga book to practice the positions she taught me and to learn routines. I usually practice for about 30-45 minutes, nothing too strenuous. I’m trying to not do anything too outlandish because I don’t feel like I really know enough for home practice yet.

I’m a 24 year old female, weighing about 20 pounds more than I’d like but within normal range for my age and height. I’m less active than I used to be (hence the 20 pounds) and I alternate between trying to eat healthy foods with lots of fruits and fresh veggies and eating a lot of frozen pizzas, pot pies, and pasta, because they’re quicker. Not a great diet, and I’m working on changing that.

My diet stays pretty much the same on weekends, so that shouldn’t be a factor. My sleep is also pretty much the same. I sleep 8-9 hours usually, though I can consistently (for weeks at a time, I once tested it to see if I would “catch up”) sleep 11 or more if I don’t set an alarm.

My general health isn’t great (migraines, moderate scoliosis, and recently very irregular periods). The pain tends to start within seconds or minutes of stopping yoga and is centered at and below my navel, balanced between the sides. It is usually more cramping, but can be sharp for a few seconds at a time. If I actually get an upset stomach, it can last for hours. If not, it usually goes away within half an hour.

Anything else you need to know? Other than this one thing I’m feeling really great, I think because of the yoga, and if I could kick this one issue I’d be absolutely thrilled.

Thank you for this, so very much.
Can you clarify please…
If you do not return to your weekly practice on Monday there is no pain at all thus allowing you to return on Tuesday also with no pain?
