Strength and muscle building yoga?

So I was wondering if there is a specific name or type of yoga I need to be looking at. I’m very new and definitely a beginner right now. But lately I’ve been seeing a lot of yoga based pictures of woman who do incredible moves and positions that require a lot of strength from all over the body. I fell in love and really want to learn and train my body to be able to do many of the things I’ve been seeing… for example. This video below is what I want to eventually be able to do.

*** Actually I could not post anything from youtube… anyways if you don’t mind look up on youtube - Yoga By Equinox

So is this a certain type of yoga? Does it have a certain name? I want to purchase books based around this type of yoga and control the woman has. It’s so beautiful. I wish I could take a class but I live in a small town and that’s out of the questions so the next best thing is teaching myself, but I’d like to watch videos or read more about this type… Can someone point me in the right direction please?

You seem to be more interested in the physical aspect of yoga. In such case, I would recommend that you see a school like Ashtanga or Iyengar Yoga rather than the spiritual oriented schools like BSY etc.

I go to the gym chain that published that video.
They mostly teach Ashtanga, which is very athletic.

Woman likes her handstands. Unless you are a gymnast now, that might take a while, or like in my case, probably never. lol. But the clip reminds me of the beautiful Yoga DVDs by Janet Stone. I don’t have any of them but from the clips you can see she does advanced poses like this but apparently it’s a choice you work up to or you hold the more beginner pose until you can. You can view (and buy) them at totalfitnessdvds.com (I trust that website). Otherwise, look for vinyasa, flow yoga or power yoga dvds to match this style. You still might want to start with more true beginner dvds if you’ve never done yoga before. Yoga Works Beginner AM/PM is a good beginner DVD but still flows in the style, just slower and with more first time instruction and poses. Enjoy!

I practice mostly ashtanga, which is very physical and also very spiritual. No less so than any other asana practice.

Why we, as human beings, insist on using a jackhammer to crack open a walnut I cannot fathom.

… because I wish to not be a walnut …

Then a walnut you shall not be.

tuuluvanna, one must learn to walk before they run. Take your time with the beginners classes.
