Strengthening my practice

Hi everyone,

I am a yoga teacher of three years. Now that I teach I do not have the time as I would like (because I am also raising a family) to practice as before. I feel like I am stuck at level 2 in my personal practice which also limits my teaching.

I welcome suggestions on how I can strengthen my practice and progress.

Thank you.

Since you are teaching yoga, you probably have done a lot of the groundwork and don’t need too much practice in asanas. Do a few basic asanas daily and go deeper in your yoga practice studying the philosophical side of it. Yoga is not all about getting more flexible and flexible.

MyAnanda - It is a difficult thing to balance teaching, practice, and life. Do you have a teacher of your own that you can turn to? Someone who knows you well and can give you this advice? Maybe they can suggest what practice is going to weave into your time the best. Maybe it is simply doing a few asana upon waking, and some pranayama. Maybe it is meditation once a day. Or I have a friend that has been doing yoga with her two year old since she was born. Their time together strengthened their relationship and brought her a lot of calm raising the girl on her own. There are many things you can do, and we will all suggest them… but if you have someone in your life who can turn to for this guidance, who is right there and close to you, it will be a huge boon to you.

Sarvamangalamangala,

Thank you for the reminder. I feel like I am up against a wall, a barrier. I will think about your suggestions. It does make me think of my music. I sing for Savasana at one studio. Spending more time expressing my music by writing and practicing might open things up.

As far as studying philosophy…the last few books I tried to study got me lost…
Introduction to Tantric Yoga by Lama Yeshe
Inner Tantric Yoga by David Frawley

I gleaned some wisdom from them but they got too intricate for me to find them useful. If you have suggestions for other lines of study I would appreciate it.

Namaste

Suryadaya,

Thank you for your suggestion. I actually have five children and practice around them, not necessarily with them. My body doesn’t feel right if I don’t get enough movement. I am beginning to think I just need to invest the time, perhaps early morning before anyone is awake, to get on my mat and work.

I am not sure if it is supposed to feel this way but it feels like my body needs to work hard in order to be content. I wonder if anyone else feels this?

Namaste and thanks for your response.
