im interested to know who Swami Vishnu Devananda learnt yoga (asanas and pranayama) from. It seems, unlike his contemporaries, he didnt study with Krishnamacharya. Am i right in saying Swami Sivananda was not an authority on asanas so he didnt learn from him?
Anula,
I wonder where this notion may have come from?
Swami Vishnu Devananda studied with and was a very close disciple of Swami Sivananda whom we can say with confidence was a supreme master of and authority on asana, among many other things yogic, spiritual, scripture, medicine, etc. He was practically a giant! And a saint! You should look him up.
peace,
siva
Dear Anula,
Swami Devananda was indeed taught yoga by Swami Sivananda. Swami Sivananda developed what is today known as Sivannada Integral Yoga. Although Swami Sivananda was a big man, he could do the asanas. Maybe not as well as a person of vata or pitta physical consitution, but he surely did his asanas and I understood from my teacher Sri Durga Devi, who is a disciple of Swamiji, he did his asanas every morning without failure.
