SYT & Yoga Alliance

Dear Mukunda,

At the World Wellness Weekend, I met Hansa, who I believe is President of Yoga Alliance.

In you training manual, you explain why you’ve decided not to be a registered school with Yoga Alliance. The reason was because Yoga Alliance was trying to promote yoga therapy standards for the insurance industry, so yoga therapy would be covered for their members. Hansa told me that yoga alliance is not supporting this movement at all, because they don’t want government standards to hinder opportunities for yoga teachers and yoga therapist. She was very strong in her opinion.

I graduated from the Temple of Kriya yoga, and because I already had credits from various trainings, I had to fill out the forms and “piece together” all requirements which took me hours and it was a big hassle!

Could you explore becoming a member of yoga alliance? It would save your students time, frustration and big fees. It would also add credibility to the program, in my opinion. Beth McCarthy

I am not interested. Being on the Board of International Assoc. of Yoga Therapists - IAYT.org that is where I will put my energy towards elevating our standards of training. I am not seeking to train yoga teachers that is focus for YA. IAYT should be seen as an organization for Yoga Therapists. Different scope. Discussions are underway about having such approval standards at some point but not near future Namaste

I just registered with the Yoga Alliance after having graduated the SYT certification course in January so that I could teach as part of teacher trainings and allow the students to get the CE credits. (teacher must be YA-500 for that to happen)

The applications at YA are very confusing. However, when I spoke with someone and I told her I just finished the course with Mukunda, she said there is no problem, that the course would for sure fill all of the requirements. I just needed to send a copy of my graduation certifictate and fill out a few short spaces in the application with previous teaching experience and training. While Mukundas training may not be registered with YA, he is surely very well recognized as is the program, no cause for concern about credibility.

Thank you for verifying the YA process. In the future the International Association of Yoga Therapy (www.iayt.org) will have similar procedure for Yoga Therapy trainings. I prefer to wait for them to have our professional standards set rather than comply with YA which is set for yoga teachers. namaste mukunda stiles
