Taking a break?

Hi,

I would like to pick the brains of fellow teachers and yogis here.

From the middle of December every year I take a break by closing my classes till the first week in January of the new year as SA basically comes to a stand still during the summer holiday and with Christmas and New Year celebrations.

During this break I also take a break from yoga, I basically do only about 20-30 sun salutations every second day, but no other asanas.

I increase my meditation times and sittings per day as I don’t have the added stress of my normal business and householder life.

I usually also go away into the bush on a retreat during this time for a few days doing mostly meditation and lots of relaxing.

My question, when you take a break what do you do? How do you spent your time? Do you scale down or do you increase your asanas and mediattion?

Sun salutations are more of a winter activity…

I essentially eat well when I am taking a break. Holidays are about food and rest and meditation for me and asana practise falls away at this time of year.

I usually only take breaks when I can tell my body is asking me too or if I’m feeling particularly uninspired by my practice. I’m actually on a break now, but I don’t think I can last one more day…it’s been 6 days!

And I break from all asana, but I might do a few sun salutations if I feel like I need a stretch.

 Fortis in Arduis, I just love the sweat I break from sun salutations during summer…it feels good to me.

Xela, I have to break as most, nearly 90%, of my students go away during this time and the remaining income from the students are not enought to carry the rent of the hall, I think you can understand this.

You don’t have a space year round? I’m unsure of how it works, as I’m not a studio owner (or teacher…yet anyway. )

Hi Xela,

No, I rent a hall on a contract basis for 11 months of the year. I have a small room at my house for my own private practice, but it is way too small to accommodate 7-11 students.

I don’t call it a studio either, studio refers for me to owning a hall where you present permanent classes everyday of the week. Due to my business and work I only present a class at night to interested people. However, this allows me to really focus on presenting yoga and not to worry about the money as it is not an income for me, I rather do it for the love of it and because I feel I have something which I can teach others.

That sounds really nice!

taking a break – I find that taking a break is not yet a deliberate choice for me. For now I console myself with the hope that I’m doing what’s best in the moment when I find myself not on the mat for a week or so.
When I take a break it’s usually because another part of my life needs that time . . . attacking clutter that kept me out of my exercise room, for instance.

what do I do when I take a break, eat chocalate chip cookies, have coffee milkshakes and have a grilled cheese sandwhiche or two. Maybe read an inspiring book or lay around and do a lot of nothing. I am good at taking breaks. Before it used to be drink beer and smoke ciggarettes were my break, so my current style of break is better for me  . You got a hobby, golf or another sport? Maybe you want to go help kids or something like that. Just have fun brother.
with love
