Buttermilk is regarded as a very therapeutic material and is used medicinally in a practice known as Takra Kalp, which is highly valued in Ayurveda. This age-old cure, made from curd, is well regarded for its cooling and digestive qualities, which make it a great way to treat a number of digestive issues, including diarrhoea, indigestion, and IBS. Takra is high in lactic acid and probiotics, which serve to balance the gut flora and aid in detoxification, metabolism, and general well-being. Its historical origins may be found in the old Ayurvedic books, wherein it is advised for improving overall well-being by balancing the doshas, especially Pitta and Vata.
