Talking to people in India

There is a teacher I have been invited to speak with in India, I reside in the U.S. does anyone know of a service that can be used over a computer to place free phone calls to India via the internet or at the very least at a reduced rate without a long term commitment ?

Help appreciated.

Try Skype…Skype to phone is cheap and Skype to Skype is free…or facebook video chat.

I was looking into Skype to phone but it appears that Skype no longer offers this service to India.

This is exactly what I am looking for though a way to make PC or MAC to telephone calls.

Get Vonage.

Thank you, but I thought Vonage only worked with Telephones.

I was looking for a voice over IP solution Utilizing a MAC or PC laptop on my side in the U.S. to a telephone in India that would not eat up air time as I do not have a landline.

Viber works from computer to phone now.
That requires a smart phone for indian side though and internet connection and i guess 3g is quite expensive there. Other wise you have voip services like www.voipbuster.com/.

If you connect your phone to your home wifi it wont eat up your phones air time. Thats how i place calls when im home. Much better than the computer if you ask me.

Thank you Fakeyogis this is exactly what I was looking for.

I just did a little research into VOIPBUSTER it appears the parent company rebadges the name into several differeny comany names to avoid there bad reputation catching up to them, from what I have dsicovered they are kown to charge for calls that should be free disconnect accounts after receiving payment and impossible to communicate with.

So still looking for a solution this one is one that some have luck with but many have problems with so I will be avoiding Voipbuster.

Give your number to the Indian teacher and ask him/her to call you back.

I never used them but met a german that did he said it was good (2011) and it seems to be having the same name now does it not? Or do you mean that the company behind that website is changing names?

Did you ask if the teacher has a computer? probably he has and then you can speak online.

I wound up purchasing a vonage prepaid calling card and then getting an education on the telephone system and making international calls.

When using a calling card one still has to enter the country code and the Plus sign + really is a plus sign it does not just mean add the country code.

So what I did was take a 5th Gen Ipod touch downloaded the Vonage app. Then went to the Vonage site and purchased a $15.00 card.

Then because my only phone is a cellular flip phone dinosaur without WIFI compatibility I used this as my vonage account number. To verify account etc… ( Yeah I know has an iPod touch but not an iPhone well I just do not make many calls and the plans are too locked in for me. )

I placed the call via the ipod this morning and scheduled a call back time.
