Ceirtanly possible. Here is where you could end up without sound foundation in spiritual training. Now I can’t tell if this is a joke or a real issue (did not approach the original post as a spiritual investigator), but it can be either way. If it’s a joke, than it does not deserve too much attention, as it is not that funny. If the latter, than we could talk about how an unbalanced, partial opening of chakras can produce such results.

e.g…when Buddhists gather in numbers they perform rituals before they meditate to keep the hungry ghosts at a distance…and of course they do this alone as well…

Interesting, and yes Oak, I agree, it is nothing to laugh about. but I would like to add that even an active mind can welcome the ‘devil’ so to speak…
Simplistically, I think that grounding the mind will keep it in good condition in everyday living and guard it . Beyond this, we should know what to look for in terms of attachment to negatives.

Yes, schizophrenic people have an attachment to a Hungry ghost/s. You are interested in something that you know little about it seems. I would strongly advise you to not carry on with your interest for the moment.

Hi Scales, sorry I’m late getting back to this thread.
I will have a go at explaining this.
Hungry ghosts lay on the fringes of the Astral world. This layer is easily reached. both by meditative states and when you least expect it, meaning when a person becomes attached without knowing it but their behaviour will reflect it.
If you see the hungry ghost it will be in a format that fits your lineage. You can note it but pay it no more attention and move past the scene.
If you hear it, it will be in your language and again you can note it but ignore it, unstirred.
If you choose sight as a path to enlightenment then you will see them at some point.
If its sound then you may hear them.
Bad meditative practice, dabbling and obsessive behaviours can attract a Hungry ghost to latch on to you. Each HG will have its particular preference. So a continuously angry person will attract an angry HG, a greedy person will attract a greedy HG and so on. The person continues with their bad practice and in doing so continues to feed the HG.
To guard against them you have to develop knowing your own mind. A mind in meditation that notes but is not moved by what it sees and moves past the scene.
In everyday life, you need to be good. Keep an eye on your mind. Think in a positive manner, do good. Its all been said before. All faiths make mention of demons. Science doesn’t understand this and prefers to dish out the medicines too quickly, labelling people along the way.
Bad living can be rectified at any point. If you have been bad you can reverse it. If you have practised meditation badly, you can correct it. If you can see that you are developing an obsession in something, you can correct it. If you have a sensitive sympathetic nervous system that easily sends you into depressions, you can detect the way in which this happens and avoid the triggers. I honestly believe that we are not informed as to how we can watch our own minds and correct disturbances, let alone an understanding of the Hg’s.
For me, the first encounter I had of an HG was many years ago. I was doing my usual meditation technique which involves the third eye. This was the only technique I had ever used and the practice was conveyed to me by my father, a Sikh.
I had not realised that you have to pay attention to accidently slipping into a meditative state. So if you are thinking about something and at the same time have entered quite a deepish meditative state then you have broken the rule…not to take thoughts into meditation.
The price of this error I made was to bring through a HG. I’ll give you a description. Its body was clearly defined, skeletal in thickness, all over and blackness all over. It had an elongated neck and chin. But this is what a skeleton appears like except you couldn’t see the bones as you would normally, just the black skinny denseness and elongated look and a clearly defined head.black eyes…black skeletal. Its movement around the room was…it was hovering, with knees bent, back bent over, head up and chin extended with palms together facing forwards which were its director, so it would point it palms at the direction it wanted to go, thrust them forward and use its legs and feet to push forward in that direction too…which was aimed towards me…I was instinctively dodging it. I should point out the terror I felt but something came over me and I repeated the Lords prayer with assertion and watched it disappear. It all lasted about 2 minutes say…
My choice of the Lords prayer was instinctive and the only prayer I knew all the way through. I said it with extreme determination like some catholic exorcism might offer…it was an interesting experience which I have understood since. It made me realise that you have to overcome fear at what you might see in meditation, even if it was an error. You have to cut down what you might see with a mental knife.
Its interesting to note that Buddha practised the method of meditation which uses sight as a means to enlightenment.
There are many descriptions of things that Buddha saw and defeated with a mental knife. When they describe the dancing girls that Buddha struggled with, this is a reference to Buddha’s weakness which was was a sexual one. So when he was thinking about sex, momentarily, then dancing girls would appear to him. He also saw all of his previous lives, right down to being once a sea creature. Each time Buddha would hold his attention steady and move past the scene. The dancing girls were one of his challenges but then sex is deeply imprinted in us.
