Tense muscles

my quads just tensed up for no apparent reason today (well, i was upset about being kept back at work & not able to attend my fav class but that’s not unusual). i applied deep heat rub cream & went for a hot yoga class but the muscles are still hard as stones. :frowning:

wld welcome suggestions on how to relax them. many thx

Interesting choices for remedy.

Topically, use organic, untoasted sesame seed oil, mix it with Sunbreeze oil if you have it or better yet use the Sunbreeze directly.

In your diet make sure you are getting proper minerals which also means make sure you’re not ingesting caffeine - especially coffee. Potasium and magnesium effect muscle release and contraction. Magnesium for contraction, potasium for release. So either an increase in bananas or a supplement.

Asana work should include Eka Pada Supta Virasana on a bolster as well as vanarasana (or lunge).

Obviously dealing with the source would be far more fruitful:-)

If you feel that your body tensed up as a result of what you’ve stated here, then you may want to explore these feelings during meditation. See if there is a message there for you.

i too am very tense in my muscles… mainly my lower half - hip flexors, quads, calves…

i dont tend to eat too many bananas cos i find they constipate me… but i have read that a lot of supplements we can buy arent really absorbed effectively into the body and mostly pass straight through…

what would be the best thing for ensuring i am getting those nutrients? are there more effective supplements ie. based on how they are manufactured???

I think, for the purposes of this post, there’s a difference between an incidence of muscle spasm or “tightness” and a day-to-day inflexibility, tightness, shortness of muscles.

Yes your point is well taken, Just as there are some expressions of yoga that are more assimilated by human beings so too are there supplements that are formulized more carefully thus result in greater absorption.

If bananas are an issue AND one is looking to increase absorbed potassium you can add baked sweet potatoes, beet greens, white beans, prune juice or carrot juice to your diet.

Could it be as simple as dehydration? Make sure your are getting enough water - esp with Hot Yoga. The simple .5oz X body weight is a good rule of thumb, but when you practice Hot, you should be up to .65oz X BW, stress will also deplete your body of essential hydration. Pure water, not fitness water which requires water to process.

Hi everyone

thanks for your wonderful suggestions, i didnt hv much time & so things were simply left v much alone and the muscles are still tense but in a lesser degree - maybe because the weekend is here! Save for the slight discomfort is doesnt affect my usual routine.

dear IA

is the oil concotion meant to be ingested or applied? also i drink tea throughout the day and only plain water after/during yoga class. will try to ease off tea slowly from now.

dear david

sad to say i dont medidate. the moment i close my eyes i doze off even during the couple of minutes at the beginning of class - i will be swaying even though i am seated.

i think this tension has a lot to do with the contradictions in my life. i hv been a vegetarian for close to 9 years but still cant make it as a vegan for i am addicted to chocolates for a start. cant gv up leather shoes & bags. is into recycling but is also very much into retail therapy and dream of owning a subaru wrx.

thus it is not quite surprising that i am into yoga and yet suffer from protracted periods of physical tension.
