When i was working in a very fast city i was always lacking sleep, one day i told i would throw everything and just went home to rest and sleep, when i finally got a chance, something happened and i was in huge pressure to deal , could not sleep again…until i was very sick in body and went to hospital, doctors treated me and warned me to stop any work. Now my body is recovered, but my brain is still so slow to recover, I m doing meditation, but the brain is still like automatical machine, i m scared…are there anyone with similar experiences or ideas to cure this kind of brain system, and make it calm and rest, and make it peace and healthy again?
Thanks .a lot.
Zhan Zhuang, a kind of standing meditation.
It takes time to calm the mind, don’t panic, in time it will likely come and it will likely be in little steps.
Books that might help
Finding the Still Point (Book and CD): A Beginner’s Guide to Zen Meditation by John Daido Loori
The Way of Energy: Mastering the Chinese Art of Internal Strength with Chi Kung Exercise by Master Lam Kam-Chuen
Chi Kung: Way of Power by Lam Kam Chuen
One other simple little thing that has helped me in the past
I don’t know where you are located and I don’t need to but there is something that I do from time to time that I forgot about until just a few minutes ago. I have used this in both the countryside and the city. I was having a bad afternoon and I went outside and I just did this and I feel much better and it did stop my brain form rushing around form issue to issue.
Go outside, walk if you want or just stand there and just feel the air, don’t name it, don’t quantify it, don’t judge it, don’t label it, just experience it and if it is windy it is better… that is all
EDIT
I forgot mention in my first post also look for books by Jon Kabat-Zinn
A seminar by Jon Kabat-Zinn
Belovedk,
Finding the still point is a good book. I’d highly recommend it. And I love the simplicity of Yulaw’s suggestion about going outside and not thinking! Do you have a garden that you can do a walking meditation in?

What Yulaw has suggested is similar to Vipassana Meditation or insight meditation which is Buddhist. Only difference is you do label it or note it. For instance if stress keeps popping into your head, label it with a “S”. Doing so gives the word/emotion no meaning and no hold over you. But in line with the above is that you do not try to understand it, judge it or solve it. You just let the thoughts come and go using labeling or noting. There is a good basic book by Joseph Goldstein called “Insight Meditation, the Practice of Freedom”. You can get it through Shambhala Classics. It is my favorite type of meditation and very effective in promoting calmness and peace.
Hope some of this can help you. Let us know please?
Besides the good suggestions from YouLaw and Lotusgirl, you need to engage with yourself for de-stressing.
First of all, brain and mind are two different entities, though they usually work hand-in-hand. Brain is an organ that can get tired, but mind is energy that gets either wasted (in too much thinking) or depleted (in unworthy emotions).
Brain can be rested (sleep, savasan etc) and rejuvanted through improved blood supply (headstand, head massage etc). Mind can be economised (breath-watch, mindfulness etc) and replenished (meditation, breathing exercises directed to chakras).

I think the issue may be with life values. Are hard work and success important values in your life? Do you intend to go back to this style of work once your body&mind recover? If yes, you should be ready for another crisis after some time. Probably bit worse because with age ability of our body to heal is lower. I learned that for some people hard work and success is central to their lives and that they can’t give it up. If thats the case, there is no need to be afraid but rather to be aware of the situation and prepare for future problems. After all its our life and we can do whatever we feel is important for us. But I think its important to check whether we are not trapped in expectations of our ourselves/family/society in which we don’t really believe. It would be silly to be sick all life only because others tell me that I should always work hard and be successful.
These suggestions and help r so nice, it is like breathing in air for me, i will keep learning for a few days…and I m so happy to find this site:)
As for my life value issue----truely i m right now on the path of a whole life transformation. The past, was all so wrong, but i had no choice, i came from a very strange and thrill background, actually i v spent many years on psychology counselling, and finally i need to come a place like here, meditation and so on…
Hi belovedk,
I would not recommend meditation at this point for you, but rather a gentle pranayama programme. The mind and breath are one, if the breath is deep, relaxed and calm so will the mind follow. If the breath is shallow, fast and at the top of the lungs so our mind remains in that stressed state.
This is what I have been taught by my teacher, you must however find within the yoga you practice what works for you and to this end I would recommend speak to your teacher about this as well for further guidance.
Yes, i m doing the breathing yoga too, by the way, which is better for healing inner pain—emotional scars?

I don’t think “breathing yoga” would be very efficient with inner pain and emotional scars. Have a look at loving kindness meditation and at forgiving meditation. Some knowledge about our psychology also helps to understand why things went the way they did. But if you had some counseling I guess you already are aware of those things.
Looks like you have some “life ride”! Hold on and breathe!

As a contribution to you predicament…for an overacive mind, racing. A good exercise is to look outward to distract the inward activity.Relax and lying down, comfortable, focusing on the stars and moon in the sky, look at the detail, take note of patterns. This can be done in the daytime as well, watching the clouds etc. An imbalance in the Ajna chakra can produce lack of sleep, restless mind, confusion, mind racing.panic
This outward focus begins to balance this and bit by bit remove these problems.
I hope you recover soon x
Thanks for all help, these two days i m feeling better…
but the most difficult is the deep issues by my abused family. And those developed negative energy inside me for a long time, like a circle, I m still dealing with this, hopefully will get over this soon.
I cant imagine growing up in an abusive family…it must be very difficult to deal with the memories resurfacing
Can I help you with a small suggestion belovedk?
I dont know what your beliefs are but this works for anyone, it is a brilliant way of interrupting an unwanted thought.
- As the thought arises…repeat the words
Ami Tabba Buddha …6 times… Ive written it phonetically
You will find that you cant remember what it was that you were starting to think about
I suppose there are times when you want to address the issues, but when you don’t, you will find it works.
Get back to me if it helps, I always enjoy peoples surprise on this. xx

Yoga philosophy:)
I did a short research on Yoga philosophy yesterday, and a book teaching about ascension ,higherself, DNA Encoding etc. I came from a christian background, mixed a little Tao, Zen .They all teach us to be a inner balance, peaceful, forgiveness etc.But yesterday i got a feeling(It is maybe already very deep inside the ego part), my mission on this planet is coming to an end. I even dont know when and how I reach this level in my minds…And if i m going to still find a purpose to be here, I need new light to shine in.
I’m not talking about “a short research” I mean live it:)
hi…
Great post

Perhaps that feeling came from the sense of exhaustion you feel and the studies you were doing (ascension, etc) that day let your mind wander to that feeling/thought and it felt so good you believed it to be true.
I believe that in these instances, a thought or feeling such as this should be observed, and let go. If it persists, in spite of any new knowledge or changes, then perhaps it might be true.
The fact that you are still here is proof that you still have more to do. You are here for a reason. Your life path is determined by following your heart. Go where it leads you.
