The meaning of a dream, and it's reoccurrence in my meditation

Since starting yoga practice, I’ve had a few intense dreams. Arguably the most intense dreams of my life. The one in question was actually not so much visual, but more of a feeling, but nonetheless incredibly intense. I’ll try to keep it simple…

In an otherwise dark space, I began to hear an intense wind sound, almost like someone blowing in your ear as hard as they can, then two white balls (of energy?) swirled around in front of me repeatedly, as if one was front the left side and one from the right. A bright portal opened up, and with my will I could move to it, but I chose not to for fear of dying. I soon woke up covered in sweat. I cannot overemphasize the intensity, much more intense than a rollercoaster, and perhaps the intensity of what I’d imagine skydiving to be.

Fast forward a week, through the recommendation of a yoga instructor, I’ve been listening to some yoga nidra meditation CD’s. At one stage the CD states that you will being to see patterns of light emerging. After about 5 attempts I saw what appeared to be the same bright energy from my dream, swirling around. It did not have the same intensity, or the portal.

  • Is this more than a coincidence?

  • Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Trademarked,
To me it sounds as if you may have begun to embark on a little astral travel. Know that you cannot, and will not die from going out of your body to travel through this portal.
But I would warn you to say prayers of protection before any meditation practice, because we do not know what we can “pick up” or attract when we are doing things beyond the physical that we don’t truly understand.
Just ask that those on the other planes who have only your highest good as their priority stay with you, guide you and protect you.
Do this, and you will not be able to do anything that could bring you harm. If the portal would harm you, you would not be able to progress through it after firmly stating your desire for protection. It also helps to visualize a light surrounding you that cannot be penetrated by anything that wishes you less than your highest good. You can imagine this as the Christ light, the light of God, or whomever you interpret as the Higher Power.

Of course, I’m just a novice, but this is something I’ve been told all throughout my life when speaking of meditation and astral travel. If there is fear, then prayers of protection will help allay it and will keep you safe, no matter what transpires.

Wow, this is very interesting. I was just reading about astral projections last night. (I’m assuming this is the same thing.) The general consensus was that there is no value in it, and perhaps even unpleasant circumstances. I’m curious how I could have found my way to that type of experience on my own, when I was simply trying to see where meditation would take me. Now I am not sure what I should be doing when I reach that point in meditation.

Your experience reminds me of a school paper we had to write “What if you were only your mind and it was a black box” Well after I stopped palpetating I wrote the easy for what I knew then. It just hits me that the wind is avatar for the stillness in yo9ur mind. The two white lights are balance, measurement, and yin yang. The left and right are your energy channels: pingala sushumna Nadi (right, left and spine from Hatha) are reaching out to greet what you are trying to choose from different paths being offered you.

Wow, I completely forgot about it, but there was a yin yang sense tied to it. The way the energy would move was almost consistent with the symbol. That’s crazy that you brought that up!

If your soul is inspired to travel in the astral, then perhaps it will be of benefit to you. I believe that there are so many who meditate with their aim being that of obtaining astral travel, and to me this is folly and silliness, or just thrill seeking. But if it happens spontaneously, then there is something to be learned? I day follow your heart in this, not what others day, and trust your gut.

I also like what Sury Nama said - that aspect had also occurred to me - the Yin and Yang. It could also just be a journey into your own mind.

What is the furthest goal of meditation? If I follow a traditional path, how do I know when I’ve reached the end? I have a challenging time with these spiritual practices because I am very used to setting specific goals and reaching them. However, with these practices, I don’t have anyone to help me set my goals, so I feel a little like a lost child, overwhelmed with the world.

I am glad the yin yang idea helped. I kmew about yin yang before yoga, and weird enough my first yoga experiance was Korean yoga and yin yang, Tai Chi. Don’t know if I understand this, but you sound like you are teaching yourself meditation and have more questions than answers. If this is true it is okay… its all good and we can celebrate each secrete until and while it unfolds. I have a client that has depression OCD bi- polar and she wanted meditation and I am not qualified for that route and kept telling her that. Then, I went to a workshop on Chakras and got an inspiration for her.
I call them energy meditations (and thus boundries are created and endings are not needed). To keep it short, we meditate on one chakra for as many sessions as needed. We started with the root chakra, imagining red, and the poses that go with this chakra, and the representation of the chakra as root in family, security, trust ect.

When you are dead you may have reached the end, but who knows?

As for the furthest goal of meditation - unfortunately our Western society seems to focus so much on the end result and not the path to get there, or even the just being on the path, not knowing the destination, letting it take you where it will.

There are so many benefits to meditation - ongoing growth, stability, balance in our emotions, clarity in thought, a more peaceful and grounded approach to life. These are all benefits of meditation. Goal? the goal is to obtain all these things, always improving. To become so detached from RE acting that all we do is act, or respond.
