This may sound daft

Hi, I have been practising yoga on and off for 20 years. I have also been teaching for two years. The strangest thing has happened multiple times after or during teaching a yoga class and I am just curious to know whether anyone else has had similar happenings. Don’t laugh but I am hearing voices. The first time I heard something I thought a student was playing a joke on me, I heard my name whispered three or four times. I turned around the first time, got up the second and third time looking and by the fourth time I was spooked [so too were my students]

This has happened a lot in the last 6 month, I can’t always understand what is being said to me and no one else can hear it. I have had my ears tested, in case it was something medical.

Anyone else had something similar happen?

If you fear it, will that make it grow, will that give you more fear? if you allow it, or even laugh at it, how would that be? Life has all kinds of things going on. the fact of existence is much more profound than hearing voices. be amazed, you are alive

I have not had that experience before. I am a little confused by your post, if you would please clarify: others cannot hear it, but your students were spooked? I was thinking because you were spooked and spoke about it–is that correct?

Outside of class, during your own practice, does it also happen? Are your frightened only because it is unusual or is there something else about it that causes you to be “spooked?” Now it is your turn to not laugh, have you made space to be spoken to and then asked it to be clear so that you hear what is being said? It may not be appropriate to do this in the classroom, as you are the teacher and are facilitating the class for others, but alone or with someone you trust, it may be something you would like to do.

People are such wonderful, unique creatures. I have clients who tell me that their hamstrings are sad or angry…that they feel or hear this. I personally have a psoas that I work with on a deeply emotional level. Our bodies, our intuition or higher wisdom, they often have a “voice” to them. I am not certain of what you are experiencing, but if you feel safe asking, then try that. Perhaps you will get your answer.

All happiness,
Nichole

Sorry, my first post wasn’t clear. Only I can hear the voices, I spooked my class the first time it happened because I replied. The voice was whispering my name, I looked up and nobody was there. By the third time it happened, I asked if someone had just come into the class and when I got up to look they must have thought I was mad! By this stage I had gone white [spooked], this also spooked the class a little. This happens out side of the class also, usually in a quiet moment. There are times when the voice is clear, sometimes it sounds like lots of people speaking at once.

I am not sure what to think of it.

What would happen if you did not think about it, and just allowed it? Maybe the voices would start talking and telling funny stories that you can laugh at. People may think your strange or weird, ok, is there something wrong with that?

PS. in my head I hear some funny comments once in a while, people ask me what is funny and I tell them it was something I thought of, sometimes I share, sometimes I dont. I am ok with it

I have had similar experiences in my life. I know I have heard voices of some in the present revisiting the past. Perhaps your students are revisiting their favorite Yoga class, their favorite Yoga instructor?!
I am a nurse and one time passing a room in the hospital heard a distinct person calling out my name. When I went back to investigate, no one was in the room. Only a well made hospital bed and polished floor. Another instance way back when, when I was in retail and heard the voices of individuals who worked in the store, and here I was just sweeping the stairway, coming back through some sort of portal revisiting the store. These were friendly voices; I acknowledged their presence by looking upward. But nothing more! Funny thing is, the store no longer exists as a viable business and was well loved by those who worked there; so, perhaps someone just wanted to bring others around to re experience the good old days. Go figure.

I believe Yoga is a fine art that joins us to our true spiritual selves and can indeed help manifest hidden gifts, perhaps supernatural gifts. Be open minded and not superstitious. Try not to over analyze them, just allow them to be. If a Yoga student questions this phenomena, be honest and just say you hear the voices too but don’t bring great weight to the matter. IMHO. om…

PS. You could be a gifted soul who is in touch with those who have passed and wish to communicate with the living. Again, just a thought!

One of the aspects we as Westerners are not very familiar with when working with yoga is that through the purification processes of yoga the body becomes a refined instrument and this is when certain siddhis (psychic powers) start to develop. Nothing to be afraid of, I trust that you have a good teacher to whom you can go now to assist you further.
