Time of day you practice

Could also be titled…do Yoga when stiff or after warmed up from the day?

This 40y/o is usually much stiffer in the morning than in the evening. Seems like I get more out of the Yoga when I do it later in the day rather than first thing in the morning.

Hi Mebe,

I’m your age as well, I sometimes do a few postures in the morning, very basic, forward bend, backward bends a little spine twisting, only a few minutes (5 or so). I do my full ~ 45-60 minutes session (as given in Iyengar’s fantastic book “Light on Yoga”) between 4 and 7 pm. If I happen to work late, I often take 5 to 10 minute-breaks and practice single postures “in depth”, staying there for relatively long, like 5 minutes Trikonasana/Uttanasana or ~ 8 minutes headstand. Particularly the late-night practice seems to help me extend my flexibility a lot. There is, though, nothing as satisfying as a full Asana-session with at least 30 minutes of limbs 5, 6 and 7 in Savasana.

Practice yoga all day long, practice yoga asana close to sunrise or sunset since there is a transitional balance going at those times, see if you notice a difference, I prefer it then but do it whenever time allows? Ashtangies practice 6 days a week and take moon days off, ever notice the influence the moon has on 71% of the planet’s surface (H2O) coincidently that’s about the same % of H2O in the average human body, which means nothing to me, I shoot for 6 days a week but usually only get 5 in, I cheat and do moon days but sometimes I use them as an excuse to procrastinate. This 54 year old is much stiffer in the mornings also, in more ways then one.

I personally practice after work. My classes during the week start at 6:30 pm. On saturdays I sometimes take a 12 pm class and 4 pm on sundays sometimes. I am not a morning person. I hate waking up early and don’t feel well when I do anything physical early in the morning.

I’m 48. I find that if I do yoga first thing in the morning, it is of the most benefit to me. It loosens me up, gets the energy flowing and my day is soooo much better. I feel more awake, more energetic, than on days that I don’t do morning yoga. Those days I may have stiffness and soreness or just general lack of energy throughout the day.
I too am not a morning person. I take at least a half hour to an hour to really wake up. If I spend even 10 minutes doing yoga (some meditation and some asana) it makes a huge difference in the rest of my day.
I also like to do some stretching in the evening before bed, as it helps me relax and sleep better. You will also eventually find yourself feeling less stiff in the mornings.

My recommendation is to do 20-30 minutes of yoga in the morning, or even a full hour, whichever works best for you. Then do yoga again later in the day.

Some in the morning, some in the evening. Nauli and seated meditation mostly in the early morning, sarvangasana (and something to balance that) in the evening.

Nauli wakes me up, sarvangasana puts me to sleep.

I do some other things during the day too, if there’s time for it.
