Truth about probiotics

I was wondering if probiotics can survive stomach acid…

this is the article from the .org website spills some light on it http://naturalhealthinformation.org/article/AA-01102/0/Can-Probiotics-Survive-Stomach-Acid.html

The truth is shocking… and most of the times you will not get any benefits and best… and can get sick at worst…

Which is why they’re starting to do fecal transplants.

Anyone wanna buy some of my poo? I have plenty for sale and can make more.

I am wondering if we are all reading the same thing by following CityMonk’s link. What I arrived at by clicking that link is an internet informercial for this person’s own brand of probiotic and also additional phone consultations with him to support using his product.

Sure, he offers some good information on how to choose a probiotic that is manufactured properly and that can deliver to the intestines, but this is certainly not an “article” as suggested in the original post–it is an advertisement.

And what does he even say in his informational sales pitch?

"In short, most probiotics cannot survive stomach acid. I say most because there is a technology out there, that when used, protects probiotics from stomach acid. However, most probiotics do not use this technology.

If a probiotic company does state they use technology which is supposed to protect the probiotic from stomach acid, there are still countless other factors that are important beyond if probiotics can survive getting past stomach acid. I will go through these factors which are needed in order to make an effective probiotic."

And he also shares this:

“That said, there are a ton of probiotics that definitely are not effective, nor quality. Many probiotics are merely marketing gimmicks or placebos or, on the other hand, can be actually harmful. You definitely get what you pay for in probiotics.”

This is certainly a great reminder to consumers who are shopping for an effective probiotic, as it is to anyone shopping for any item, “You definitely get what you pay for…”

I think Udo’s Choice is a stellar probiotic product and here is a link to their informational introduction to probiotics and the online advertisement for their products. I use Udo’s probiotics as needed and recommend them as well. (btw, I have no affiliation to Udo’s nor do I get kick-downs. I pay full price at my local natural grocer.) And like the link in the original post, Udo’s offer a lot of great information on probiotics gained by their own research and development, but again, it is still advertisement and promotion of their product, not an independent article.

As with all things, be willing to invest your time in careful research before being willing to invest your money or introduce any product into your body for therapeutic purposes.

Caveat emptor or buyer beware. And yes, that should include buying into what I share as well!

@David, thank you for sharing that link–what a amazing medical therapy for colitis! This is my first time reading of this therapy, though I do know about the delivery of beneficial bacteria during vaginal births from mothers to their babies. Here isa link to a synopsis of this research done in part by my alma mater, the University of Colorado. The research and discovery around beneficial baceria continues to be amazing!

Wow, that’s fascinating Nichole! I never thought about that aspect of natural delivery. And yet more and more women are getting C sections when they don’t need to. It’s sad, really.
