Ujayyi Breathing

How does one know if they are doing the Ujayyi breathing correctly?

What function does ujjayi serve for you? Were you taught it by a qualified instructor? Why did they introduce the technique to you?

I would say that you are doing it correctly if it is serving it’s intended function.

One asks one’s teacher.

Do you study with a teacher or at home?

I’m doing it at home. I have a book that I am using.

The larynx is slightly contracted, there is some soft vibration of the vocal cords. It is a throat breathing. The breath should be smooth and not loud, I have been taught that another person must not be able to hear the sound at a distance of two meters. It is useful as it helps to maintain the attention on breathing. It is an indicator during asanas, changes of asanas. If it doesn’t keep smooth it means that the asana is not mastered. There are variations of ujjayi pranayama, but when we regulate the breath through the nostril, we never breathe through the throat at the same time. It is to be avoided in case of throat infection or if the vocal cords have been to much involved in voice production.
