UK scientific study on benefits of yoga for back pain

Hi all,
I am new to the forum, and thought you may be interested in the below article which has recently been published here in the UK. The scientific study proves the effectiveness of yoga for lower back pain. I am back pain sufferer myself, and have just started the programme myself. It’s very well structured, and specifically prepared for people with non specific low back pain. Unfortunately I am unable to provide a link as I am new to the forum :frowning:

However, the scientific study can be found at the University of York, in the UK. Go their website and search in the news section for back pain, and you will find the study. Perhaps, someone could provide the link for the benefit of other.

@cymru,

The above is the back pain study link. Very interesting article. Thank you for sharing it with us! As a teacher and someone who suffers from back pain, it would have been nice if the article mentioned what yoga poses were used in the study. Did they incorporate pranayam and meditation also? Adding these would have added to the success rate and long term goal of reduced pain. Shifting awareness away from areas of pain to areas that are pain free is quite effective with chronic pain sufferers and a technique I use frequently. Asana can be part of a therapeutic treatment plan for chronic back pain, but Yoga in its totality can be even more effective and longer lasting.

Hi Lotusgirl,
the programme itself is a 14 week programme, and builds from a very basic level, and then moves through a number of stages. I will give you another link hint, which you will have to post for me as I still cannot post links. If you google “yogaforbacks uk” , your top hit should be the site you need. This is the site being used to promote the yoga here, and I think should answer your questions. The programme is very well thought out and structured. Furthermore, the programme is supported by a full scientific study. No more doubt, this works and here is the scientific evidence to prove the benefits of yoga! :slight_smile:

Here’s the link:

Looks like they will train yoga teachers in this program and one can also purchase the book a/o DVD.

Thanks again!

Hi,
thank you for posting the link. I have purchased the book, which is very well structured. I hope you found the link and information of interest.
