I’m not very exalted but a beginner in indian scripture, but I can recommend to you one particular edition that is said to be one of the best english translations and commentaries which I was recommended to being with: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Commentary on the Raja Yoga Sutras by Sri Swami Satchidananda (available on Amazon.com) - This is the only one I have thus far but I like it very much.

Thanks everyone for their kind input.

I really like the commentary by Baba Hari Dass.

I am going to write a detailed commentary in my blog on Classical Yoga Studies- Yoga upanishads, Yoga Sutra. I personally like osho’s commentary. He becomes Patanjali himself when making commentary on Yoga Sutra.

We all know that Patanjali has provided eight components of the yoga. However, information as well as understanding of the 8th Stage which is Samadhi, is very less and the world is stuck in the 4th Stage which is Pranayam.

The entire focus right now to gain physical well being as well as sharpening mind by following Yoga. Idea was going beyond mind and gain, explore the consciousness which unlimited.

People are more interested in the commentaries and words, not to the explore what is beyond words.

There are numerous commentaries on Patanjali’s sutras elegantly written by authoritative teachers ,but they are in sanskrit. In english i like the one written by Edwin Byrant which is a comparative study of popular commentaries in Sanskrit.Below is the link:

A great place to learn yoga sutra is yogapradipika/yoga-sutra wherein you could learn sanskrit original, English transliteration, translations and commentaries by Maharishi Vyasa, Swami Vivekananda and Sri Osho. A word by word meaning is also there.
