What postures are good for S-Shape spine

My friend has S-Shape to right side spine, if any yoga postures or pilates could be help?

Yes, yoga can help with an S-shaped spine, also known as scoliosis. Joining a general hatha yoga class may help a little bit, just like any other form of physical exercise. To really change the S-curve, your friend would have to work on an individual basis with a very experienced yoga teacher or a yoga therapist.

Mukunda Stiles has written about this (Structural Yoga Therapy) and so has Elise Browning Miller (Yoga for Scoliosis). If you search for “scoliosis” and “Mukunda” on this forum, you will find more.

Mukunda Stiles has successfully worked with students with structural scoliosis. First, the student is assessed for weak and tight muscles. Then several months of strengthening is done below the area of the curves. After this, work is started on changing the shape of the spine. At the end of the - two year - period, a suitable activity is selected to maintain strength and health for the rest of your life.

So, yes, improvements are possible. It requires a dedicated student and an experienced yoga therapist.

Hi Willem

Tks for your kindest and detailed advise.

That’s very interesting. I also have a friend who have an S-shaped scoliosis. I was hoping to invite her in joining a yoga class but her condition made me to hesitate. Thanks for the enlightenment.
