i still don’t know much about yoga and i just wanna ask if i can do yoga all by my self without a personal teacher but only dvd’s and online tutorials as my guidelines. i’m still on the basic and proper breathing.
“Can” you? Sure. You have free will and can do anything you choose. However I’d point out that with free will comes complete and total responsibility. You get to choose and you accept the result or residue of said choosing with grace and aplomb, no matter. There is no greater yoga than that.
When you reach a point in your practice where you feel yoga’s power and you have a reverence for it, then you’re likely to seek the guidance of a teacher. In the meantime I wish you that which the teacher holds - the delicate balance between safety and effect.
I would find a teacher. Let people in the forum know where you live so they can give you some suggestions.
Would be nice to have a sticky somewhere on the site that lists all kinds of learning yoga options for all locations.
I think you can go to sivananda ashram. They have lots of branches all over.
A beginner better find a good teacher to learn all the basic things so as to avoid any harm by doing yoga on ur own.
After master the technique and ought to know then u may practise on ur own.
A teacher is most essential for the effective learning of Yoga. You will avoid errors and prevent self harm if you seek the guidance of a good teacher. Find one and start your practice as soon as possible.
All the Best!!
I did. With DVDs and books.

Which DVDs did you use? How was the program designed from beginners to advanced? How was your progress?
I started with the 4 video set Yoga Zone for beginners with Alan Finger. I’ve seen and enjoy a lot of beginner yoga videos and still think they are the best foundation. Based on what I learned in those videos I had no problems transitioning to more advanced videos.
Yoga is best learn if you have a good teacher, they will assist you, help you, correct you, giving you the knowledge an technique you need, and for sure having them around when u first trying to do new asanas and especially advance one will prevent u form injury, and on the other hand, books and DVD are just 2 and 3 dimension, sure you can learn from it, but a teacher by your side is 4 dimension, they can correct you right in the moment that you need them most to, and also books and DVD will be outdated, even the famous LIGHT ON YOGA book by BKS IYENGAR is always edited to the present knowledge of Guruji, Yoga always evolved, and books or DVD will become out dated, sorry it’s just my opinion, Namaste.
I started with Yoga Zone and some books too. Then I went to a class and the teacher gave me a couple really basic adjustments and WOW – they were very important adjustments.
Imagine learning a foreign language just from books, with no one to help you with pronunciation . . .
He, he – or, how do you study someone up on the TV doing Down Dog when you’re trying to do it yourself?
