Where to start?

Hello everyone, I am new here. I have been interested in yoga for a while, but have put off trying it because it seems a bit difficult to do it right. It would be nice to receive some guidance here, such as what series of poses to perform and maybe some resources that would explain exactly how to do the poses. Particularly, I am looking for poses that would help the back/spine and hips. I have severe back problems, brought on by a slight case of pecrus excavatum, and my hips are uneven, with the right side being slightly higher than the left.

I was really hoping that daily yoga could alleviate some of my back pain, and straighten my spine and hips. Thank you

As you have a diagnosed problem with your back and pain it is essential to go to a properly qualified teacher or therapist. Just working from books, DVDs or the internet without any prior yoga experience could easily do more harm than good.

Yoga could definitely help you but please seek face 2 face help.

Actually doing it wrong is doing it right.

By that I mean there should be no expectation of a proficiency in doing something before you’ve begun. What fun would it be if we only did things we knew we could do well?

As I’ve stated here many times, the nature of the issue determines the nature of the response (by you). If you have a hangnail on your toe then a small response will likely remedy that. For a larger problem a larger response is required, assuming one wants it to “go away”.

What you’ve outlined here is of significance and while it can be dealt with it is not, obviously, a hangnail on your toe. That having been said, there are protocols for dealing with such things however they are passed from teacher to student ina one-to-one setting. Therefore as my esteemed colleague outlines above, it is best to dedicate appropriate time and energy in studying with a therapeutically trained yoga teacher (if Yoga is the modality you choose for supporting your healing).

I agree with both of above contributors “Yogacambodia” and InnerAthelete on learning Yoga asanas (poses) under guidance and supervision of a trained and experienced yoga teacher/therapist.
Lower backache can be caused by various factors like lumber spondylititis, lumber spondylosis, lordosis, degenerative disc disorders of grade1-4, week muscles, digestive disorders, inflammation in lower abdominal organs, etc.
So, it is important to get the problem diagnosed. Diagnosis is process of identification of cause of an illness and illness itself.

Poses, and their sequence, to be advised by a Yoga teacher on one on one basis will too depend correct diagnosis of the problem (backache).
