What type of practice is your favorite and for what reasons? I’m really into the flow of my Sun Salutations DVD by Shiva Rea and was curious to know the thoughts of others on this thread!
Hi Frankie,
Lately I’ve been enjoying both Yin and Ashtanga Vinyasa. What I like about Yin is the meditative aspect. To me, it’s a bit reminiscent of the Vipassana meditation practice where we practice observing sensations without attaching to them. I also enjoy holding poses for several minutes – a practice that is not common in western yang-based asana classes. I like finding an “edge”, which is not pain but just discomfort, and remaining in the pose long enough for that discomfort to change and adapt into some form of acceptance or even comfort. It’s a practice that I find very relevant off the mat – being able to find comfort and acceptance in situations that I initially feared. There’s fight or flight, but somewhere between those two, there’s also ‘hang out and observe’. That’s Yin for me.
I used to think Ashtanga Vinyasa was some ego-driven practice than only builds a sense of worldly, individual power. Then I actually tried a few classes and couldn’t remember why I thought that about it! I like how every pose has a specific drishti, which helps me to direct my attention inward. I’m also enjoying the way that the sequences are set and not created by the instructor. I used to think that would be boring, but continuing with the same sequence has helped me to note progress and keeps my mind from getting distracted by asking “what next?” I’ve also found didicated ashtangis to be quite invested in their practice of the 8 limbs of Patanjali’s yoga.
