Why my manduka mat is SO slippery!

I purchased a Eco mat and today was the 2nd time i used it.
I have to say I almost killed myself today on this mat. It is extremly slippery and I can’t do any of the standing poses and cant hold my down ward dog for more than 2 seconds!!!

Do I need a towel or sth?
This mat is $70 bucks and it is worse than my Wal mart $ MAT!

Did you expect it to NOT be slippery? I don’t think I’ve used a mat that I didn’t find myself slipping on. I use a towel over my mat and that solves the problem, while keeping the mat a bit more clean. Just get a towel, problem solved.

But it is more slippery than my old Wal Mart $10 mat!!!
I cant do any postures on it. Hands and feet were just slipping at a amazing speed!
I dun expect to buy a $40 towel after this $70 mat.
I am disappointed to be honest…after reading so many good things about manduka

The Manduka mats are covered in a sheen when you buy them. You are supposed to wash them before you start using. The label should say what it ok to use for this, or if note - the website surely does. If you are doing an extremely hot and sweaty class, it won’t help - but a very good washing right in the beginning will help you. I had the same problem when I bought mine.

Hi! Here are the FAQs on the Manduka Website. I can’t post it here but go to Manduka, click on Customer Service and then the FAQs. They do say that it takes time to “break in” your mat and you’re not the only one slipping on the mat. There’s a section about slipping on the mat that tells you:

“There is a break-in period that everyone, including those who are on our mats, has to go through before the thin film wears off and the slipping is almost completely eliminated. Typically, it takes about three months of daily practice and a “little” bit of slipping during that time so that the friction of feet and hands wears on the mat.”

Hope that helps…
