Why thigh is parallel to floor

In many poses you are asked to bring your thigh parallel to the floor - what is the anatomical reason why we do this?

I guess you are talking about postures like Virbhadrasana (Warrior pose).
It is required for the following reasons:

  1. To prevent knee ligament damage.
  2. To get proper center of gravity
  3. To have stable and firm posture
  4. To tap certain muscle group
