Winter yoga?

Is there anything such as winter yoga? Somebody told me yesterday that in winters, it is better to do dynamic stretches or power yoga( instead of holding a pose in an asana, to do that asana several times like doing Survya namaskar fast several times). I do the conventional yoga(static stretches) before going for Tennis everyday. Is that all right for winters? Static stretches are normally done as a cool down activity after the Tennis session.

There is Yoga and there is winter and once per year they intersect.
Though of course here, yet again, I believe we are talking about asana.

There’s nothing wrong with modifying one’s practice seasonally. And there’s nothing wrong with not modifying it seasonally. The practice should suit the human doing it. So if someone told you there is Winter Yoga, then for them apparently there is.

Some students are affected by the weather. Some get charged up by heat, depressed by dark. The practice should address that condition in you. If you get moppy during the winter months because you live in a climate where it is dark, cloudy, and rainy/snowy in the winter, Surya Namaskar might be a fine response.

It looks to be 50? in New Delhi so perhaps such this pertain to you, at least for today:-)

If your yoga practice feels good to you, then please continue. Never mind generalized statements about what you should or should not do.

Traditional hatha yoga makes relatively few references to the seasons. However, ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, does say that winter is a kapha season. To balance kapha, a warming and stimulating practice like dynamic suryanamaskara is warranted. The extent to which the winter season influences you depends on your ayurvedic constitution. Your constitution is probably different from the constitution of the person you talked to. So you may or may not need a more dynamic practice in winter. At the end of the day what counts is what works for YOU.
