IF interpreted literally there would be an error to it. IT has a deeper meaning.
If we are the soul we would have no false belief. So then the ego must have the false belief that it is not realized. Truth is the ego can never be realized so it cannot get rid of any false belief. So only by getting rid of the ego we will get rid of the false belief.
So if we literally try to get rid of the idea and think we are already realized plus having the ego we create more false beliefs and hamster wheel spins on.
Sometimes it seems like the masters forget to whom they are giving the message, they could have made a better explanation or maybe it is because not common man should understand them as at those times only the worthy could receive the teachings. Not open to the masses as it is now.
So by getting rid of the false idea he means getting rid of the ego that has the false idea.
