Hi! I recently found myself (hopefully temporarily) unable to use my wrists during my practice due to what seems to be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. My practice veers around power vinyasa, with lots of inversions. I’m substituting my forearms for my hands where possible, but I’m finding that the intensity of my (usually sweaty practice) has subsided. I’m trying to see this as an opportunity to focus more on my flexibility, but I would love tips, suggestions and ideas on how to keep some intensity in my sequences. Has anyone else had to deal with carpal and yoga? Help!
some intensity in my sequences
Your CTS issue has indicated that you should focus more on moderate yoga movements and individual postures than sequence. Strength and power comes with moderate posture and good retention.
Well its individuals self choice, but I wonder why people get into “high intensity sequences” especially when dealing with Yoga. Power flow / Sweaty practices should not be called yoga itself.
Patanjali says “sthira sukham asanam” (2.46) that means Asana is steady and comfortable. Performed with willingness as well as acceptance. Firm as well as pleasant. Strong as well as relaxed.

I have written one article on it and have helped few student come out of it. Please check article “Yoga for relief in carpal tunnel syndrome” at http://www.sohamyogastudio.org/new_news.php
I agree principally with Umesh above. I tend not to presume 2:46 refers to physical ease and comfort (at the exclusion of mental ease and comfort) but the point holds nonetheless.
If the issue with the wrist stems from your occupation, correction needs to be made there. If it stems from your asana practice then I’d assert you are lacking appropriate action in the hands - specifically in the palm, the heel of the palm’s two mounds and arch.
As to the poll, the wording threw me since it asks if I prefer to substitute “hands for …”. But I get the meaning never the less. It’s case by case and depends on the posture because what I am determining is how best the student can receive the effects of the pose in the safest way possible. Further, I would not exclude a slant board or gripitz from the conversation.
