Yoga Alliance

I’m having a problem with Yoga Alliance. I went to a three year school and logged over 1400 hours…I also studied in India and have countless hours teaching. I called Y.A. and they said because my old school was not registered that in order for me to get my cert, the old school would have to pay $600 plus then I have to pay $300, plus fill out tons of paper work (that part is expected). I’m not so sure my old school will do such a thing and the teacher, who is 500 hour plus certified moved on. He is willing to sign off on all my syllabus and I have recommendations but no good. I’ve paid thousands already. Their solution pay for a 200 hour course from another school. Seriously??? I started a petition to get heard:

Any advice is appreciated.

As per your training and teaching experiences, instead of wasting your time, money and energy on fighting against YA, you should start your own YA e.g. YA …, YA …, YA …etc.

Other option is to get deeper into yoga …and become a yogi(ni).

Wow, that’s unfortunate that you have had to go through so much trouble with YA. It is important to remember that they are simply a registry of teachers, and at the end of the day, your training far exceeds anything YA can offer. Especially if you are teaching, your students will be more interested in the depth of your studies than your official title.

What I don?t understand at all is why you want a certificate from YA when you have so much teaching and study experience. YA is just a business selling certificates and it sounds like you should be above that. Your teaching being in yoga should speak for itself , and not because you have some paper saying you are linked with some business that is just , well… a business. Why do you let yourself sucked into that? It is costing you too much energie and frustration, go above that , unless you have something still to learn in this conflict.

Two weeks ago I attended a 100 hr training that I found on their website. I paid $1,500, stayed 6 nights (hotel, meals) etc. We did 6 - 8 hr days and of those 48 hours, 6 hours were in public yoga class which doesn’t count as “contact hours”. So I’m at 42 hours. We did to 2 - 2 hr practices a day and 2 one hr sessions of “team building” for a total of 18 hours, less from 42 and we are at 24 hours of “training”. 2 hours per day of 6, and it was lame with very little, moments not minutes, practice teaching.

I called YA and asked about this situation and the fact that the school/studio I attended was registered with them. The short version from YA as quoted: “we are overwhelmed. Studio’s send us an application and a check, if the curriculum meets out standard they get registered. We are too busy to look at the actual training that is given.” She never asked me what studio it was.

YA is a gimmick, and a good one at that. If you need the paper, you need a YA registered training.

That is just screwed up, if they don’t even check the schools properly even when there have been complaints… That just means it’s all just for the money.
