I injured my right knee while playing basketball .Its a ligament tear.I was regular with my gym and running but for the next 5-6 months I will not be able to run or do any yoga involving my knee.I am afraid that I may gain weight during this period.I am in lot of mental pressure due to my injury. Can anyone suggest me some yoga , meditation techniques and a diet regime that could help me stay healthy physically and mentally and maintain weight. Please help me.
Hi Abhay,
I’m sorry about your knee injury. This seems like a better question for a physical therapist. I can’t really think of any hatha yoga you can do with a rehabilitating knee specifically to stay in shape other than certain pranayama and kriyas that stimulate a sluggish digestive system. Maybe a PT can suggest something like swimming that won’t put any strain on the knee. As far as diet, I found that yoga/meditation definitely helps keep me aware of what my body needs for nourishment and not to eat out of boredom or stress. Good luck with the recuperation. Thanks for checking in with us. And please consider restarting a hatha yoga practice after your knee is healed since you will likely develop asymmetries in the left/right side of your body that will need to be corrected.
Anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate, medial collateral or lateral collateral?
Partial tear or complete?
Fluid on the knee or no?
Blood in that fluid when aspirated or clear?
Opting for surgical repair or not?
Under the care of a medical practitioner or not? If so, what has been advised thus far?

Thank You for your help.I cannot sit in any asanas right now,so I have started doing pranayam while sitting on a chair.Hope it helps.
Dear Abhay,
In yoga, you will not able to do asanas (poses) as your movements are restricted. Regular practice of Sukshma Kapalbhathi (active exhalatioins) @ 30 to 60 strokes per minutes for 2 5 minutes; prithvi mudra for 5+ minutes; visualization involving imaginations and auto-suggestion, etc. may definitely be helpful.
For dietary regime, see a dietician, who will be able advise you a diet chart involving 200 to 500 calories reduced diet depending your weight gain …grams per week. Of course dietary reforms should not with compromise current requirement of protein, vitamins and minerals.
Thank You Sir ,I will definitely start with kapalbhati and prithvi mudra.

Sir ,today I got my MRI report. The doctor said that there is inflammation in my ACL and he can’t tell whether there is tear or not until the inflammation is gone.He suggested me one week rest and to see him after that.
Then the knee joint should not be taxed in any way until the inflammation has subsided. Students with such issues would of course be able to “do” anything that is calming to the nervous system, Calming the nervous system helps the immune system operate at higher function and therefore may speed the healing process. This should be supported with dietary changes which avoid foods that encourage inflammation - sugar, wheat, dairy…
Warmly,
gordon
It’s difficult to burn calorie with Knee Injury. However there are many Yin postures that can help you the mental aspect. Also Pilate with no knee on the ground can really helps too. Check around on youtube and you can find tons of Pilate exercise!
Hopefully op,s knee is good by now as it was months since posting.
Weight is no problem fast and meditate ,eat in moderation cut the amount of food you consume to be on a level to the activity you do . Now is a great time to learn more about the yogi diet .imho Rest and get well as soon as you can ,I hope you are not in pain
Peace and cheers
P.s. the great thing about yoga is the physical aspects are only one part of the magnificent body of yoga
With healthy diet and yoga we can maintain weight easily after any injury. It is good to do yoga for body recovery and weight maintaining but diet is also very important. Nice topic and good post for information.
