Yoga and Elbow pain

I have been doing yoga for several years. I have tried many different styles. I once did an intense 40 day program of Baron Baptiste Power Yoga! I then went on to a different type of fast paced power yoga but I found i was no longer paying attention to foundations I had originally learned. So I found a new studio with excellent teachers. I enjoy the vinyasa flows the most because the teachers are excellent at calling attention to small adjustments that previously went noticed.

It was only recently I started noticing some pain in my right medial elbow especially during down dog. It’s more of an awareness, not a sharp pain. I notice it most when I lift my hips in down dog, which I love to do, because it’s the only thing that gets to the tightness in my upper thoracic spine. I think I’m finally getting the to the full pose, except for my elbow. I’ve tried to ensure my inner elbows are facing each other, but I cant tell if its making a difference. It seems to help if I rotate my wrists inward, which I think is incorrect. No wrist pain is present.

It is noted that for a living I make prosthetics and orthotics, so I do work with my hands often. This made me think of golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) However, I only feel the pain during yoga and not throughout the day. It will last for maybe a half hour after yoga. And it’s onset was in January.

I havent asked about it at my studio yet, I do plan to. Any ideas? I have been backing off yoga because of it. Boo.

Thanks Yoga Community

You could change style of yoga, as this style does not seem to suit your body well as you work with your hands very much already, you will probably stress you arms to much if you continue. . There are other styles that not put so much pressure on the elbows. Dont stop yoga just because one style is not for you.
