Yoga and spirituality

Hello everyone!
I am very new to Yoga. I have tried 2 classes so far from 2 different Yoga studios in my area. Anger issues and hurtful issues in my past have caused me to seek spiritual answers to help me in my suffering. As such, I sought Yoga to try a different avenue of approach. My life had been stagnating for awhile and I’ve noticed my anger creeping up, so I’ve opted to try something new and fun such as Yoga for an outlet. Do I need to worry about the spiritual part of Yoga? I would like to study it, but maybe since I’ve been after the spiritual for so long, should I just concentrate on the physical? The two classes I attended were very refreshing and I slept like a baby afterward. I also felt so good in my spirit after the classes. It leads me to think maybe the spiritual and physical are connected. Could it be Yoga could be the link between the physical and spiritual spheres for me?

Sanchito, Yoga already includes both the physical aspects and the spiritual aspects as part of its system. The aim is not to to focus on just one aspect, but to focus on them all, because a system is more than the parts that make it up and cannot function without all the parts.

Now is there a link between the physical and spiritual? Yes of course there is, if you improve on the physical, you will also experience spiritual benefits like less anger, calmer mind and more positive emotions, but is this going to be enough to completely eradicate or manage anger, bring about total peace and contentment and joy in your life? No, because if that was true millions of people who practiced only the physical aspects of Yoga would have achieved this. The relationship between the physical and the spiritual, is kind of like the relationship between health and exercise. It is true that exercise has a positive benefits on health, but it is also true that exercise alone cannot achieve this, one also needs good lifestyle and diet. Similarly, if you are wanting to achieve spiritual goals like self-control, eradication or management of anger, anxiety, addiction, cultivating love and compassion, you cannot achieve them with just physical practice alone. If that were possible, there would be no need for a “spiritual aspect” in Yoga.

The truth is the physical aspect is a fraction of the Yoga system, and Yoga really is a spiritual system where the physical aspect plays a subservient role. It acts as a sort of preliminary practice to prepare for spiritual Yoga proper.

Sanchito, congratulations! You have met a spiritual system where you can bring your body with you  . Surya Deva has excellent advise above, I just want to add one thing: Give yourself a break. It is ok to enjoy asana (the physical excercises of yoga), even to desire it. Soon enough you’ll be desiring all the other aspects as well.
