Strongman and yoga do not mix.
Not sure of you’re skeptisism but here is a video of me at a meet a few year back
Edit: Thank you whoever deleated that post
You do look the part. I’m just not sure how you would look in yoga pants
Strongman and yoga do not mix.
Why would you say that Nelly? I think there is a lot to gain for big strong men to loosen up and become more centered and balanced.
Besides, I don’t know of any non-inclusive yoga classes. I think you would have a hard time keeping him out. Plus I know lots of girls in my yoga class that would totally go for a big strong man over the skinny little guys we normally see

Hi yogaites
Great post Nichole, thank you very much.
I feel like there is a war going on inside of me right now.stature.
I think I…aints?
Lencho
if you stick with yoga long enough with a good teacher , there is something extremely powerful to be learnt just from full yogic breath alone.
( incorporating abdominal breathing and chest )
I have been to many different yoga schools . and you know what ?
some people never learn this but there is great power in doing the yoga practices with your awareness focussed on the breathing , it takes a while but you will be surprised what it does and where it takes you.
i think the first time it clicked for me , i left class singing my head off and sang in the car all the way home … ( and i hate singing and hated my voice if that tells you anything ! )
it unlocks many parts of our being , albeit slowly , but i will say that improved awareness of yourself , your body , the power in your spirit , improved focus of your mind , clearer sense of direction and even intuition develops.
( you might even find you eat less and feel stronger )
others here will reply to this
stick with it , dont be concerned by others in the class , just do your yoga , listen carefully to the teacher , but also Listen carefully to your body.
there is a great deal of power locked up inside all of us.
breath work , also meditation too if you want , are tools that can allow you to get in touch with that deeper broader aspect within you.
enjoy.
I don’t know about your case, but typically huge muscle mass (as you surely have) tends to contract much easier, which contributes to a very very low flexibility. Yoga can help you with such stretching, as well as to focus your breathing which would help focus your strength. A good stretching work out will a well, contribute to decrease lag times due to muscle soreness, etc.
Hope to see you in the mat Mate
Take care
P.D. By the way, I admire you guys. Its really unhuman the things you’re able to do…
Well Lencho, I’ve trainned in power lifting for a while and was very strong. With a 500 pound squat and 500 pound dead lift, at 200 pounds. And I still train in yoga. My main practcie is dyana yoga now.
Yes, yoga will take you to the next level. Dont be afraid to walk in a studio and start at the beginning. Yoga is not that hard. You will see, yoga is good for your performances and even better for your inner spiritual life. If you do it well, you can probably get the best of both worlds.
Yoga will get you more focused, and you need that when you lift. Also yoga is perfect for releiving all that muscle tension.
Good luck.
Since this thread has been added to recently, I wanted to include this link to this interesting Yoga studio called Iron Yogi: http://www.ironyogi.com/. The photos alone offer a different view to what is commonly advertised in the yoga world.
Namaste,

Great site Nichole
thanks
Sorry I’ve been off the boards for a while. I plan to finally connect my heavy weight lifting style and Yoga to become the best I can be.
It is great idea to do yoga as a supplement for any training.
Some martial arts schools offer yoga as a supplement for training. I teach yoga in few mma schools and guess what? most of student are hunky big guys:)
Even if you can find yoga at mma school, you should not be worrying about that you will look different in yoga class. Usual people are accepting different people very well
Usual people are accepting different people very well
If the microcosm of this site is like the local yoga world I should be accepted just fine
Hopefully that Quezalltroll dude isnt around though.
Hello all my name is Dave and I currently compete in Strongman. I was thinking of implementing Yoga as part of my core training. I feel that an increase in flexibility and sense of calm will help take me to the next level in Strongman (yes ESPN)
I guess my main fear is being so large and walking into a Yoga studio full of tiny people who are going to be far more advanced in this area. I have read some information on this subject but I just feel lost.
Can anyone help an extremely large man figure out what would be the right direction to take? Do I start with videos and then move to a group setting?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Your concerns are understandable, but you’ve been given some Great advice!
Just do it. You’ll be glad you did! Also: Learning to do proper breathing and doing the pranayama will help you find some inner strength that you never could have guessed you had!!!
The portion that I quoted above and highlighted gave me a smile.
I help laddies learn how to do basic weight training. The #1 concern they have about heading into a gym is the mirror opposite of your concern here:
They’re worried about going into a weight room around a bunch of large, muscly, strong guys and not knowing what to do.
It’s cool to see a guy with the opposite side of the coin.
What would you tell a lady with a concern like that?? Same thing you’ve been told.
Ignore them and begin where YOU are, make progress…feel GOOOOOOD.
Your Brother
