Yoga asana and pranayam

Hi Frinds,

can we do pranayam and asana consecutively.

which is the best timing for doing it. ??

Ive never been a fan of pranayama after asana, whereas I love dhyana after pranayama.

However it depends on the asana and the pranayama.

I recommend a dedicated pranayama practice exclusive of asana. Are you pressed for time and want to fit both in?

We can do anything we want, but whether it is efficient for you - who can say?

The yoga sutra-s list asana first, then pranayama, because asana prepares the body for pranayama by reducing obstacles to comfort, and reducing rajas and tamas. With this, the mind is calmer and free to focus on the more subtle aspects of controlling the breath. After we do pranayama, the mind is more fit for concentration, and we can begin withdrawing the senses and moving towards dharana.

When you ask for the best timing, do you just mean in sequence? Time of day? Length of practice?

Hello and welcome

Traditionally pranayama is done after asanas. Asanas activate and harmonize your pranic body so the best moment is after asanas.

And to finish, meditation is done after pranayama, as the latter calms and focuses your mind.

I’d venture to say that:

  • Through asanas we transcend our physical body, annamaya kosha.
  • Through pranayama we transcend our pranic body, pranamaya kosha.
  • And through meditation we transcend our mental body, manomaya kosha.

But if you do it in the order you wish you will also reap much benefits.

Enjoy!
