Yoga & carpal tunnel syndrome

i’ve got cts and for a while i wasn’t working so it kind of calmed down a bit… and practicing yoga didn’t affect my wrists…
but i’ve started working again (i use a computer at my work)… and today i started practicing yoga again after a week break and my wrists hurt!
more importantly my right hand ring & pinkie finger and my wrist were all throbbing… especially when i was doing downward dog and cat poses… basically anything that required putting weight on the hands…
i was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for my problem…
anyone else out there with cts and understand the pain in the arse that it is?

First it would be a good idea to have the facilities people at work revamp the ergonomics of your workstation. they should do this with a smile since it’s saving them workman’s comp dollars. The mere mention of it mobilizes staffers pretty quickly. Since proper keyboarding ergonomics are all over the web and since this is a yoga baord I’ll not venture into that discussion.

As for the yoga practice, it’s a very real problem and should not be taken lightly. There are a couple of ways to deal with this in yoga nad frankly you should be working with a senior teacher trained in therapeuticss.

Some students find relief using a wedge (in adho mukha) while others use those barbell looking devices which allow you to grip. I’ve had students make fists and place their knuckles on the floor but I do NOT advocate this as I feel it brings a certain tension into the brachial plexus that deos more harm than good.

You can, of course, have a thriving practice without weight bearing on your hands. It might also be worthwhile to be working with that senior teacher so the actions and alignments of your hands/wrists/arms are carefully examined and executed in your practice

thanks… i’ll keep the suggestion in mind…
