Yoga causing back pain?

Just started with some yoga a few weeks ago. Lower back has been painful since I started. Is it common to have such pain from the twists? If so, how long does it take to get used to the yoga?

Thanks

Twisting can definitely cause lower back pain, especially in the SI joints (at least for me.) I usually will do some gentle forward folds as counter poses to twists.

How long it takes is up to your body, but remember that yoga isn’t supposed to hurt. A lesson I’ve had to learn is the difference between sensation and pain.

If you’d kindly say a bit more I’d be glad to give you feedback.
However as it currently stands I can’t determine what sort of practice you are doing, for how long, in what ways and in what style nor can I surmise whether you are 80 and feeble or 20 and active.

Thanks for both replies. I’m 54 and male. I do some activities such as weightlifting, jogging, skating, biking, longboarding, etc. Just moderate stuff but 6 to 8 times per week between various activities. (How to get on the slopes soon too.)

I’ve always done some stretching / yoga but only half ass. Been putting in about 45 min a day 5 days a week on yoga. Before maybe 5 to 10 min a day…if that.

Pain is low back and feels like dull pain you get when you strain muscles after laying off the weights for a long time. Pretty constant pain although subsides when sitting.

If you’re not working with a teacher who pays attention to students’ alignment right now I’d suggest you do that. There are subtle things going on even in the gross anatomy of an asana, and lower backs like to heroically compensate for misalignments in the body or misalignments between rigor and ability.

Hi,

I started yoga because of lower back problems in L4 and L5. Initially it also felt as if the pains were worse after a yoga session. Under the guidance of my teacher who assured me that the pains will dissapear once my stomach and other muscles have strenthten sufficiently, I diligently continue. And true to her word, after about a year of yoga my muscles have strenghten to such a degree that the pains in my lower back was less and not as intense. After another year or so I noticed that the intervals was now perhaps a bit of back pain once every three months.

Somebody once said it has to get worse before it can get better, in my case it was definitely so.

I did go for accupuncture during those forst stages just to help me over the worst pains. Perhaps you can try it as well.
